Like most celebrities with an upcoming project, Tom Hanks has been on a press tour, promoting his latest film, Captain Phillips.

However, his stop to the Late Show with David Letterman involved more than just playful talk show banter and a plug for his next project—he shared a startling health revelation.

The 57-year-old actor has type 2 diabetes.

Tom revealed that the condition wasn’t exactly shocking, as he’s struggled with blood sugar levels most of his adult life.

“I went to the doctor and he said, ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been dealing with? Well you’ve graduated. You’ve got Type 2 diabetes, young man,’” the actor recalled to Dave.

Despite the diagnosis, Tom’s bright sense of humor and optimism was shining as he explained that the condition can be managed with diet; doctor explained to Tom that if he could weigh as much as he did in high school, he’d “essentially be totally healthy.”

“Then I said to her, ‘Well, I’m going to have Type 2 diabetes because there is no way I can weigh as much as I did in high school,’” he said.

When Dave asked, Tom said he weighed 96 lbs. in high school.
