When Did Kalani and Asuelu Meet?

The couple met in July 2016 during Kalani’s first trip to Samoa.

Her Dad Didn’t Approve

Kalani explained that her dad is Samoan and he came to America at 12 years old to follow his American Dream. Since he struggled because of his background, he didn’t want his children to do the same.

“He wanted us with white guys,” Kalani explained. “And he wants me to be with someone who can provide for us.”

Too Young?

Her dad also felt Asuelu was too young for Kalani and he wasn’t sure if Asuelu would be able to adjust to life in America.

K-1 Approved

But Kalani’s dad didn’t have much of a say because Asuelu’s K-1 visa was already approved by the time they filmed for season 6 of 90 Day Fiancé.

Welcome to America

In season 6, episode 2, Asuelu touched down in America for the first time. Immediately after arriving, Asuelu took his shirt off and performed a traditional Samoan dance for Kalani — in front of the entire airport.

Jumping Right Into Fatherhood

Asuelu seemed excited to have a more active role in Oliver’s life. With Kalani’s help, he quickly learned how to care for a baby like feeding, changing and soothing.

Kalani’s Dad Issues a Warning

Kalani arranged a family dinner for Asuelu to meet her dad for the first time. While at the dinner table, her father laid down the rules for his soon-to-be son-in-law.

“Rule number 1: you don’t disrespect my daughter. As soon as you disrespect my daughter or my family, me and you [are] gonna have issues,” he told Asuelu.

Baby No. 2

Shortly after Asuelu arrived in America, Kalani found out she was pregnant and expecting her second child with Asuelu. She would later give birth to another son, Kennedy, in May 2019.

Wedding Bells!

Kalani and Asuelu made it down the aisle on September 14, 2018, which was within their 90-day period.

Wedded Bliss

The couple seemed to be doing well, judging from updates they shared on their lives via social media after their season ended.

Return to the Franchise

They even gave fans a glimpse into their home life when they joined the TLC spinoff, 90 Day Fiancé: Pillow Talk.

Happily Ever After?

But when they returned for season 5 of Happily Ever After?, it turned out they had several issues. Kalani’s parents moved in with them to help care for their children and to help them financially, as Asuelu only had a part-time job working at a nearby grocery store.

Not Seeing Eye to Eye

Kalani was also upset because she felt Asuelu spent too much time playing video games or playing volleyball with his American friends and not enough time helping her around the house, with their two children. She also felt he didn’t prioritize one-on-one couple time.

On the other hand, Asuelu felt Kalani should not complain about feeling overwhelmed because he felt “women’s work” like caring for children, cooking and cleaning was “easy.”

Huge Fight

Their differing views on their roles in their marriage led to a big fight between Kalani and Asuelu in a car ride with Kalani’s mom to California to celebrate Oliver’s second birthday.

After Kalani said Asuelu didn’t help her with their sick children the night before their road trip, he called her a “lying bitch.” They continued to bicker over Kalani’s job as a mom and Asuelu told his wife, “And the sound of your voice is so f—king annoying, too.”

Working It Out

After Kalani’s dad stepped in to talk some sense into Asuelu, the couple were able to move past their issues. But once they got to a good place together, Asuelu’s family brought major drama that almost tore them apart.

Family Drama

Asuelu and Kalani visited with Asuelu’s family, and his mom and sister were upset that he didn’t bring them a monetary gift. Asuelu’s family insisted that it’s custom in their culture for the sons to financially support their families, but Kalani refused to allow Asuelu to give his mom and sister money when they were struggling to support their own family of four.

The tension boiled over when Asuelu’s sister, Tammy, threatened to fight Kalani during a meeting where Kalani made it clear that Asuelu would not be giving them any money. The external drama almost drove Kalani and Asuelu to their breaking point, but they went to couples therapy and were able to handle their issues as a team.

More Issues

Once they had moved past the drama with Asuelu’s family, even more internal conflict broke out between the couple when the coronavirus pandemic reached a peak in the United States in spring 2020. Kalani said Asuelu disregarded social distancing and protective measures, so she kicked him out of the home they share with her parents and sent him to go live with his mom and sister. The 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? season 5 finale featured a scene where Kalani dropped Asuelu off at the airport.

By the tell-all, the couple were already reunited and back together, but they were still dealing with issues in their marriage. “Today, we are together and we’re living together, but we aren’t anywhere near where we used to be when we were first together,” Kalani said in an update. “We’re just in a really rocky place right now.”

Better Days

Kalani and Asuelu continued to document their love story on season 6 of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? in April 2021. The couple seemed to be in a better place and they were hoping to buy a house and move out of Kalani’s parents’ home to start over fresh. But after a miscommunication between the couple regarding their intimacy, Kalani contemplated divorce again — and she even met with a divorce lawyer to discuss her options.

Shortly after, Asuelu got into a scary car accident while working his rideshare job. His near-death experience was a “wake-up call” for the couple to put their differences aside and make their marriage work for themselves and their kids. They even enjoyed a romantic getaway, where they were able to reconnect as a couple.

Still Together?

It seems the couple was finally able to overcome their issues. In June 2021, Kalani even shared a sweet tribute to Asuelu and her father, Low, in honor of Father’s Day.

“Happy Father’s Day to the best of the best 🎉💞,” she wrote, including several photos of her husband.

Aloha State

The couple was all smiles as they went on a trip together to Hawaii in March 2022.

After a fan asked him where his “beautiful wife” was, Asuelu shared a TikTok video that he also posted on Instagram of himself, Kalani, their kids and her sister Kolini enjoying the waves of the Aloha State.

“Yes, we here with my family,” he told his followers, before calling Kalani “my baby.”

90 Day Diaries Fight

The couple returned on the season 3 premiere of 90 Day Diaries in March 2022. Unfortunately for them, they continued to struggle with communication issues and got into a huge fight. The pair were gearing up to sell their Utah home and Kalani felt Asuelu wasn’t pulling his weight when it came to the household duties.

“I think you feel good ‘cause you get to get out of the house and you get quiet time and you get free time,” she spoke of the current status of the relationship. “When my mom’s gone, I don’t get that. I’m by myself. I’m with [the kids] almost the whole day. I’m doing everything almost completely by myself.”

Following the episode, the pair were no longer following each other on social media and Kalani blasted her husband on Instagram for allegedly blocking her.

For Sale

Kalani detailed on 90 Day Diaries that she couldn’t wait to sell their Utah home and makes moves to join family in California. The pair listed their five-bedroom, four-bathroom property in May 2022.

Single?

In June 2022, Asuelu posted a lengthy message via Instagram on why his wife has been absent from his social media.

“[She] don’t wanna join my Live, she doesn’t want film TikTok with me. She’s different from how she used to be. She doesn’t wanna go out with me,” he captioned a video of him dancing with his wife. “Everything she needs I supply for her, [especially] the boys.”

Asuelu added that he had “a lot to say,” but he couldn’t at the time because he is “under the contract.”

To add to the speculation, the Samoa native noted he was “single” while showing off his impressive weight loss via TikTok that same month.

Golden State Aspirations

After listing their Washington, Utah, property for sale in June 2022, Kalani “manifested” a move back to her home state of California. 

“Please someone buy my house so I can move back to California,” the mom of two wrote via her Instagram Stories in July 2022. “I need the beach, Disneyland and for no one to call family members the n-word. Amen.”

Speaking Out

Asuelu revealed he was also preparing to leave his current state as he shared a TikTok on “What it’s like living in Utah” in October 2022. In the clip, Asuelu is in the driver’s seat of a vehicle apparently getting pulled over by a police officer with the song “Locked Up” by Akon playing in the background.

“Just a few days and then bye Utah,” the Samoa native captioned the video. That same day, Asuelu took to Instagram to slam critics who accused him of not “being a good dad.” 

“This for all of you bitches that complain about my life,” he said in an Instagram reel. “They say grow up, be a good dad, bitch I’m here, buying all the [groceries] buying all the food, buying everything for my family.”

Changes

Kalani got “emotional” while packing up the Utah home she once shared with Asuelu in October 2022. 

Time Apart

While the couple was finally seemingly relocating from Utah to California, Asuelu instead left to visit his extended family in Samoa on October 22, 2022. 

Hinting at a Split?

With Asuelu in the islands, Kalani seemed to continue to hint at a split from her husband. 

“Life looks a lot different than what I had planned,” the mom of two shared in November 2022, alongside a compilation of photos and videos of fun outings with her two sons. “Here’s to us learning to go with the flow.”

Home for the Holidays

After months of split speculation, Asuelu returned to California in December 2022 after a more than month-long trip to Samoa. While Kalani wasn’t present in Asuelu’s initial Instagram post, in another post shared that day — her voice could be heard in the background. 

Reunited

Kalani and Asuelu seemingly slammed split speculation, posing for a family holiday picture in December 2022. 

Cheating Scandal

During season 1 of 90 Day: The Last Resort, which was filmed in January 2023 and premiered in August, Kalani revealed that she found out Asuelu received oral sex from a woman in Samoa, which led to him getting a yeast infection known as thrush on his tongue. It was also revealed that Asuelu offered to give Kalani a “hall pass” to kiss anyone as payback. She used the hall pass to have sex with another man, which led to her catching feelings for him.

Getting Serious

Kalani started posting photos of a mystery man in December 2022, and fans recognized him as Dallas Nuez, who turned out to be Kalani’s “hall pass.” Now, as the drama between Kalani and Asuelu unfolds on The Last Resort, things between Kalani and Dallas are reportedly getting serious. A source revealed to The Sun in July 2023 that Dallas has met Kalani’s family and they plan to “move in together.”
