Idol: No more saves

idol_andrewkatie.jpg The American Idol top nine took to the stage again this week, thanks to the judges' save last week for Michael Lynche. And while the outcome this week was good for Michael, it wasn't so good for fellow contestants Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens, who were sent home in a double elimination.

Neither contestant was a stranger to being in the bottom three and while upset, they took the news gracefully. "I think the singing part was easy," said Katie. "It was nerve-racking going into the judging."

Many thought Andrew peaked in the Hollywood week rounds after a blazing rendition of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up," and his subsequent performances lacked personality. "They never hung out with me," says Andrew. "If they had, they would have loved me — I guarantee."

Both contestants admit having last season runner-up Adam Lambert as a mentor this week was inspirational. Adam also returned to the Idol stage with a visually-stunning performance of his new single 'Whadda You Want From Me," a spectacle that would have made Lambert collaborator Lady Gaga proud!

As a mentor, what advice did Adam Lambert give you?
Katie: Adam told me to always stick to what I love and believe in. He was a great mentor, as he has been through the Idol process and was able to give us feedback on what he did and how he was able to evolve throughout the pressures and everything.

You said you were doing this for your grandmother. Why was that?
Katie: My grandmother raised me, and she was such an inspiration. She's been to every performance I have been in and inspired me to follow my dreams. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, it affected me, and I wanted to do something great while she could still see me and remembered me. I accomplished my goal to have her be proud of me and see me do this.

After asking people on-air if they voted for you to send their phone bills to take you to prom, did anyone?
Katie: No, but the day after I made that proposal, I got a bunch of people who offered. I haven't received any, but they said they would.

What's next for you: prom, graduation?
Katie: I don't think I will be able to attend prom or graduation because that's when tour rehearsals start. But I will go home, hang with my friends and keep up with school so I can graduate and get my diploma. I am looking forward to the tour and hopefully, after that, writing an album. I am excited for what is to come.

Your performance of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up" got more than 3 million hits — did you think it would be so huge?
Andrew: No, when I was looking through the list of songs I saw "Straight Up" and knew Paula wasn't on the show anymore, and I could do my little twist on it and see what happens. It took off and went crazy.
What did you think of Ryan Seacrest's waltz to Tim Urban's song on Tuesday?
Andrew: I was like, "Ryan has lost his mind," but I love the guy. He works a lot, so he has the right to get a little coffee in him now and then. [laughs]

As a mentor, what advice did Adam Lambert give you?
Andrew: The best advice he gave me was to let go and have fun, but put my twist on it. I knew where he was coming from, as he puts his twist on everything he does and is amazing at it. That inspired me.

What's next for you? Will you propose to your girlfriend?
Andrew: I see myself making an album, getting ready for a tour and just having fun. I am starting to write songs, too. Idol showed me there is so much more to music and how amazing the industry is. I'm going to propose to her, but I don't know when. But I am for sure going to marry her.
