Jody and Shannon are sent packing on The Amazing Race

AmazingRace0222.jpg
After just barely surviving for first leg of The Amazing Race, Jody Kelly and her granddaughter Shannon Foster had a lot of ground to make up when the second leg sent them to Santiago, Chile. "We definitely started at a disadvantage since we left the pit stop later than everybody else," Shannon tells In Touch adding, "by the time we got to the bus station we did have to get on the very last bus." Although they were able to catch up and Jody didn't even let getting kicked in the head by a cow during the Roadblock slow her down, they were still the last team to arrive and were eliminated.

What was your first impression of Chile?
Jody: It's gorgeous.
Shannon: Such a beautiful place with all the volcanoes and the misty lake that we got to boat across.

Jody, you handled getting kicked in the head by the cow with such grace. Are you okay?
Jody: Thank you. I'm fine. I did have a knot on my head but it didn't feel like a concussion at the time and certainly nothing since then has made me think I had one. I grew up with a few cows and I've milked them before so actually I was able to jump back a little bit from the worst of it. No permanent damage.

That's good. You kept such a positive attitude during the whole race.
Jody: Well, when you're my age you either die or you live. I wanted to live and in order to do that you have to stay positive.

Speaking of your age, was it an honor to be the oldest person to ever compete on the race?
Jody: I am. I broke the 70-year age ceiling! So many people tell me that I'm an inspiration and I always say 'thank you. Now go and get your grandma off the sofa.'

Shannon, are you proud of your grandmother's performance?
Shannon: Definitely. I knew that she'd be able to do phenomenal on the race but I didn't know that she'd be able to handle having so little sleep so well. After going on plane rides and bus rides and waking up and being ready to compete, she did a really fantastic job.

Do you think the other teams underestimated you?
Jody: I think they wrote us off from the very beginning. Most of the teams didn't say anything out loud but I could see them looking me over and thinking that I wasn't any competition.

Would you do it all over again?
Jody: In a New York minute!
Shannon: Definitely. I just love traveling.
Jody: If they ever have an AARP edition of the race, I'm there!

What are you doing now?
Shannon: I just moved to Alaska and signed up for my first marathon which will be in June.
Jody: I resumed my business, which is called Strength Mobile. I'm a personal trainer for the elderly and disabled. Suddenly I've gotten a lot more business! I've also begun training for my first half-Iron Man, which I think will be in September if illness and injury don't plague me.
