The Oscar winner's publicist confirmed his death, which is believed to have been a suicide caused by asphyxiation.
“Robin Williams passed away this morning,” his rep said in a statement. “He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
He leaves behind his heartbroken wife Susan Schneider and three children Zelda, Cody and Zachary. Susan released a statement tonight saying, "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken.
"As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."
His last Instagram post two weeks ago was a #TBT snap of him and daughter Zelda to celebrate her 25th birthday. He captioned it, "#tbt and Happy Birthday to Ms. Zelda Rae Williams! Quarter of a century old today but always my baby girl. Happy Birthday @zeldawilliams Love you!"
