It’s been a bumpy road for Rihanna and Chris Brown, but the “Diamonds” singer is finally opening up about their off-and-on again relationship.
While some may not understand why she’s chosen to patch things up with her once abusive ex, Rihanna’s not worried about the opinions of others— she’s simply looking for happiness.
“I decided it was more important for me to be happy,” she tells the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine. “I wasn’t going to let anybody’s opinion get in the way of that. Even if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I’d rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it.”

Their public reconciliation comes nearly four years after Chris assaulted the Bajan songstress the night before the 2009 Grammy Awards.
And she’s not worried about that happening to her again, because according to her, it never will. If it does, she’ll be ready to walk.
“He doesn’t have the luxury of [messing] up again,” she says. “That’s just not an option. I can’t say that nothing else will ever go wrong. But I’m pretty solid in the knowing that he’s disgusted by that. And I wouldn’t have gone this far if I ever thought that was a possibility.”

But has the 23-year-old entertainer really changed his ways? He did, after all, just assault hip-hop artist Frank Ocean earlier this week, who is now pressing charges. And in 2012, he got into a fight with rapper Drake at a NYC nightclub. Regardless, Rihanna has his back.
“He made a mistake, and he’s paid his dues,” the 24-year-old says about the 2009 incident. “He’s paid so much. And I know that’s not a place he would ever want to go back to. And sometimes people need support and encouragement, instead of ridicule and criticism and bashing.”
As for the public’s perception, she understands why everyone questions her decision on rekindling their romance.
