Jake Pavelka learned a lot when he vied for Jillian’s heart on The Bachlorette last season, so much so that he wasn’t sure he wanted to be the focus of The Bachelor, which starts again in January. “That hesitation was because I saw Jillian had a lot of painful decisions and things happen to her. I wanted to see how her season went and if the process would work out for her,” the 31-year-old airline pilot tells In Touch, making it clear that he’s looking for love, not fame. “I understand it has be entertaining, but I am not going on here to make a TV show. I don’t give a flying flip about the production.”

Are you ready for the ride?
I am ready for that, but it’s kind of a by-product of what they need to do to keep the show entertaining.
People are probably going to start digging into your past — is there anything you want to come clean about now?
If there are any skeletons in the closet, I am not afraid to expose them. Whatever — there are no DUIs and I have a clean flying record.
You were considered “too perfect” when you were on — what is your dating flaw?
My vice with girls on first dates is if I really like them, which I did with Jilian, I come across a little too intense and that’s only because I really want you to like me. That was the case with Jill. It can be overwhelming. That has been the story of my life and what perfect guy would do that?
You will likely be meeting a bunch of girls you might really like, so will you try to reel that in?
I am going to just be myself, yet back off a little bit. Girls like a tiny bit of mystery and if you throw everything out there on the first date, they get bored. So while I won’t be keeping things to myself, I am going to unravel things a little slower, which is much healthier.
Is it weird that some of the women may know you from last season, whereas you know nothing about them?
I think that’s good and will hopefully work out in my benefit. They know that I am this way.
Are you looking for someone like Jillian?
Jill had a lot of qualities, but I didn’t get to know her really well. I loved everything I knew about her up till I left the show, but I don’t know enough about her. Similar qualities, yes, but it wouldn’t be enough to sustain a 60-year relationship.
Did you follow the fallout after the show about her relationship with Ed?
If I saw them in a magazine I would read the article to see how they were doing. I think they are going to make it, though some see them splitting up. But she is into Ed, I am telling you. I was there and it was a little disheartening to watch. When we were in Whistler right before he left the show... Her mind was made then. She was kind and trying to explore everyone else, but I felt she had given her heart to Ed. And then he left and upset the whole thing, but it was still interesting.
Are you still flying? Is that something your new lady will have to get used to?
I am. It’s such a great career. I have been at the airline for about 10 years and with my schedule I fly three days. If I leave on Monday afternoon, I am home Wednesday night. It gives the relationship a little bit of air and then I am home Thursday through Sunday and we can do whatever we want and go where we want. And we get the flight benefits, so with the partner benefits, it really works out well.
Is anything different happening this season?
They have told me nothing! I sat down with the executive producer and he explained that they’d be keeping everything as a surprise. As a pilot, I hope things might be aviation-based, but I have no idea. So I’ll be getting excited about the things with the girls as they find out.
