U.S. Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps can rest a little easier: He will not face drug charges in connection with a photo in which he's shown using a bong. “We didn't have physical evidence. We didn't have enough where we could go arrest him,” Sheriff Leon Lott, of Richland County, S.C., said.
While Phelps has escaped prosecution for the photo, he has not escaped entirely: He has received a three-month suspension from swimming competitively and has also lost lucrative endorsement contracts. “There are also some important lessons that I've learned,” Michael said. “I really appreciate the support my family and fans have shown me, and now I will move forward and dive back into the pool, having put this whole thing behind me."
