She may be going through quite the legal battle right now, but it seems Teen Mom OG star Amber Portwood has at least one person on her side: her ex, Gary Shirley. After being arrested and finding herself in the midst of a custody battle with ex Andrew Glennon, the mom of two has been having a tough time, but on Monday, July 29, her ex spoke up on Twitter to show her some support. Looking Up

Though Amber has a long journey ahead of her, it seems like things have started looking up for her lately. On Thursday, July 25, she was granted supervised visits with her son.

Family Drama

Over the 4th of July, she and James’ father, Andrew, found themselves in a fight that would pretty much blow up their whole lives. After arguing about a fireworks show, things turned physical.

Protecting James

Though Amber denied using a deadly weapon, reports indicated that she had attacked her then-boyfriend with her fists, a shoe and even a machete. The claims came from Andrew himself via court documents obtained by The Ashley’s Reality Roundup.

Lashing Out

“Ms. Portwood grabbed a shoe off the shoe rack and hit [Andrew] with it,” read the Affidavit for Probable Cause. “Mr. Glennon stated he was holding [the baby] and he turned to the side to avoid [the baby] getting hit with the shoe.”

Getting Violent

The papers continued, “Mr. Glennon stated Ms. Portwood picked up a machete … Mr. Glennon stated he locked himself and [the baby] into the office. … Mr. Glennon stated she hit the door with the machete and kicked the door and broke the handle.”

Getting Help

After Andrew reached out to the authorities, Amber was arrested for domestic battery, and that’s when things really started to heat up. The father of one obtained a no contact order against his ex and filed for emergency custody.

Single Father

Soon after, the Teen Mom dad also filed another custody order, asking a judge to grant hime sole legal custody and primary physical custody. “Father believes it is in James’ best interests,” read documents obtained by Radar Online.

Looking Out

Andrew also asked the courts to make sure that Amber couldn’t be alone with James. “Father believes that it is not currently in James’ best interests for Mother to have unsupervised parenting time,” the docs stated.

Past Altercations

The paperwork noted Amber’s previous history of violence, including the altercations she had with Gary. The MTV show chronicled the exes’ relationships when they were younger, including the physical fights.

Speaking Out

The two made up just one of many messy relationships featured on the show, but Gary has admitted that he regrets sticking around. “If I were to change anything [about our relationship] … I would have walked away a lot sooner,” he told In Touch in September 2017.

Rocky Road

Though Amber and Gary have pretty much made peace with each other, they’ve still had some problems since splitting up. In January 2018, Amber called out Gary and his wife, Kristina Anderson, for talking about her on the show.

Public Feud

“Make sure to watch Gary and Kristina tonight talking s–t about me!” Amber tweeted at the time. “It must be hard making money off of me! Being such a bad mom and all. … Where would they be? Wait … in a one bedroom shack in the ghetto of Anderson where he was before I got out and the show came back on!! Ignorant!”

Calling a Truce

Two months later, Gary apologized after another TV fight. “I feel horrible for the things I’ve said in tonight’s episode [and] probably next week’s as well,” he said in March. “I’m sorry & I want to continue to strengthen the co-parenting relationship we have.”

Standing Together

Now, Gary’s come out to publicly defend his ex once again. “All I could ask is for is
[Amber] to be happy [and] healthy,” he tweeted on Monday, July 29. “She has all of my support when #TeenMomOG continues this Monday.”

Family Love

Gary isn’t the only one lending a shoulder to cry on our a helping hand to Amber. Her Teen Mom family has also stepped up to the plate. Costars like Maci Bookout and Cheyenne Floyd showed up to comfort their friend in court.

Catelynn Lowell has gone above and beyond for her friend. “There [are] always two sides to every story… [You are] only hearing one side, 🤔” she told fans in July. “I love you, @AmberLPortwood, I’m on my way to you now.”

Support System

Though Catelynn made sure to clarify that she “does not condone abuse,” she knows how important it is to show up for the ones you love. “When I went through all my crazy mental illness stuff my friend helped, me supported me, and loved me!!!” she said. “And I’m going to do the same.”
