No love in lockdown? 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? star Kalani Faagata and husband Asuelu Pulaa seemed to hit another rough patch while self-quarantining together when the global coronavirus pandemic hit the United States — and it seemed they were headed for a breakup.

During the season 5 finale, a note from producers appeared on the screen that read, “Three months have passed. In that time, COVID-19 reached the United States and the state of Utah. The pandemic has put additional stress on Kalani and Asuelu’s marriage.” Utah reported its first coronavirus case in March.

In her confessional, Kalani, 31, admits she and Asuelu, 24, have been fighting a lot because she feels he is trying to “expose himself” to coronavirus since he keeps going out with friends and then lies about his whereabouts. “I have to protect my kids. I’m not going to just let him back in the house with the babies,” she said. After another big fight, Kalani kicked him out of their home and purchased a one-way ticket for him to stay with his mother, Lesina Pulaa, in Washington.

“I don’t know when he’s coming back because this is not working anymore,” Kalani said.

She discussed her marital issues with her mother, who lives with Kalani and Asuelu, their kids and Kalani’s dad, Low Faagata. Kalani said she didn’t want Asuelu to potentially expose her, their kids or her parents to COVID-19 and felt it was best for him to leave.

“I don’t really see the point of being married anymore. I really am just done. I’ve just been fighting and trying my hardest and it’s just me trying. There was like, 20 percent of me that’s waiting to see if he’ll change, but I’m not going to hold my breath,” Kalani told her mother.

Kalani’s mom, Lisa Faagata, told her daughter she would support her no matter what she decided to do as she wiped away tears. Lisa said she was disappointed in Asuelu and said she really doesn’t “care” if Kalani stayed in the marriage or not.

In his confessional, Asuelu said he felt Kalani “overreacted” about him breaking social distancing rules amid the pandemic. “I don’t want to go away and that’s really hard for me to accept,” he said.

Kalani and Asuelu left at 3 a.m. to take him to a shuttle bus that would take him to the nearest airport in Las Vegas. Kalani broke down in tears in her confessional.

“It’s like that thing everyone says, ‘Oh, love isn’t enough,’ and I think that’s where we’re at,” she said, crying. “We love each other and we have love for each other but it’s really not working.”

While it seemed like the couple was headed for a split, their social media activity seems to hint they may have been able to work through their issues. In July, Asuelu shared photos of his “family adventure” to a local park with Kalani and Oliver, 2, and Kennedy, 16 months. While Kalani hasn’t shared photos of Asuelu on her page, she posted a cute couple’s selfie in June.
