The Biggest Revelations from Prince Harry’s Memoir ‘Spare’: Quotes, Claims, More

The Alleged Assault

Harry claimed that his brother “grabbed [him] by the collar, ripping [his] necklace and … knocked [him] to the floor” during an alleged 2019 altercation over Meghan. The Duke of Sussex also alleged that William called the former Suits actress “difficult,” “rude” and “abrasive.”

King Charles’ Marriage to Camilla

When recalling his father’s marriage to Camilla, the Queen Consort, Harry claimed that both he and William asked the then-prince to not marry her.

“The only thing we asked for in return was that he didn’t marry her,” Harry claims. “‘You don’t need to get married again,’ we asked him.”

Drugs

Harry admitted for the first time that he “had been taking cocaine” during his teenage years.

“Of course I had been taking cocaine at that time,” he confesses in the memoir. “At someone’s house, during a hunting weekend, I was offered a line, and since then, I had consumed some more. … It wasn’t very fun, and it didn’t make me feel especially happy as seemed to happen to others, but it did make me feel different, and that was my main objective. To feel. To be different.”

Princess Diana’s Death

Harry recalled the moment when his father informed him that the late Princess Diana “had a car accident.”

“’My dear son, mum has had a car accident,’” Harry wrote. “’There have been complications. Mum has been seriously injured and has been taken to hospital, my dear son.’ … He would always call me ‘dear son,’ but he was repeating it a lot. He spoke quietly. It gave me the impression he was in shock.”

Princess Diana’s Ghost

The former royal revealed he had visited a woman with “powers” who claimed to have contacted his late mother. In the book, Harry recounted when his son, Archie, had broken a Christmas ornament, and the woman Harry spoke to claimed that Princess Diana was present during that moment.

“’Your mother says … something about a Christmas ornament? Of a mother? Or a grandmother? It fell? Broke?’” Harry claims the woman asked him. “’Your mother says she had a bit of a giggle about that.’”

The Spare author admitted to feeling that William’s wedding to Kate was “yet another farewell under this horrid roof” and “another sundering.”

“The brother I’d escorted into Westminster Abbey that morning was gone — forever. Who could deny it?” Harry wrote. “He’d never again be first a foremost Willy. We’d never again ride together across the Lesotho countryside with capes blowing behind us. We’d never again share a horsey-smelling cottage while learning to fly. Who shall separate us? Life, that’s who.”

He continued, “And I recall Willy walking her back up the aisle, and as they disappeared through the door, into the carriage that would convey them to Buckingham Palace, into the eternal partnership they’d pledged, I recall thinking: ‘Goodbye.’”

While he claims he doesn’t remember most of the wedding, Harry noted that the Princess of Wales looked “incredible” during the ceremony.

Who Is Prince Harry’s Real Dad? 

Harry alleged that King Charles liked to make “sadistic” jokes about who his real father was. In the past, the Duke of Sussex became the subject of a rumor that his real father was Diana’s former partner Major James Hewitt.

“Pa liked telling stories, and this was one of the best in his repertoire,” Harry explained in his book. “He’d always end with a burst of philosophizing: If this mental patient could be so thoroughly convinced of his identity, no less than Pa, it raised some very big questions indeed. … Who knows if I’m really the Prince of Wales? Who knows if I’m even your real father? Maybe your real father is in Broadmoor, darling boy! He’d laugh and laugh, though it was a remarkably unfunny joke, given the rumor circulating just then that my actual father was one of Mummy’s former lovers: Major James Hewitt. One cause of this rumor was Major Hewitt’s flaming ginger hair, but another cause was sadism. … Never mind that my mother didn’t meet Major Hewitt until long after I was born.”

Losing His Virginity

The former royal also remembered the moment when he lost his virginity to an older woman.

“She liked horses, quite a lot, and treated me, unlike a young stallion,” Harry wrote about the woman. “Quick ride, after which she’d smacked my rump and sent me to grace. … Among the many things about it that were wrong: it happened in a grassy field behind a busy pub.”

Harry Regrets Watching Meghan’s ‘Suits’ Sex Scenes

Harry admitted to making “the mistake of Googling and watching some of her love scenes online” when he began dating Meghan.

“I’d witnessed her and a castmate mauling each other in some sort of office or conference room,” he recalled. “I didn’t need to see such things live.”

Meghan Was Allegedly Told Off for Kate Comment

In his book, Harry recalled his wife saying Kate “must have baby brain because of her hormones” following a tiff they had before his wedding with Meghan.

“There was a discussion about the timing of the wedding rehearsal and the flower girl dresses, and Kate was very upset,” he alleged, adding that the Duchess of Sussex was told off for making a comment like that to Kate because she wasn’t that close to the Duchess of Cambridge.

Harry ‘Snapped’ at Meghan in Huge Fight

Harry reflected on an explosive argument he had with Meghan, noting that she had said something he “took the wrong way” because of a cultural difference.

“Maybe the wine went to my head,” he began. “Maybe the weeks of battling the press had worn me down. For some reason, when the conversation took an unexpected turn, I became touchy. Then angry. Disproportionately, sloppily angry.”

Harry continued, “I was also just over sensitive that night. I thought: ‘Why’s she having a go at me?’ I snapped at her, spoke to her harshly [and] cruelly.”

After the actress left the room, the Duke of Sussex wrote that he had approached her to talk.

“She was calm, but said in a quiet, level tone that she would never stand for being spoken to like that,” Harry added. “I nodded. She wanted to know where it came from. I don’t know. [She asked,] ’Where did you ever hear a man speak like that to a woman? Did you overhear adults speak that way when you were growing up?’ I cleared my throat, looked away [and responded], ‘Yes.’”

William Didn’t Want Harry to Propose to Meghan

Harry alleged that his older brother thought he was moving “too fast” with Meghan and warned him not to propose to her.

When it came to wedding plans, the former royal also claimed that William didn’t want the then-newly engaged couple to tie the knot at Westminster Abbey, where he and Kate wed, or St. Paul’s Cathedral, where Princess Diana and King Charles married.

Harry Was Charles’ ‘Spare’ 

In his memoir, Harry claimed that when he was born, his father told his late mother, “Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare — my work is done,” referring to William being the first in line to the throne and Harry being the next.

King Charles Banned Meghan From Balmoral After Queen’s Death

In Spare, Harry claimed that his father told him he didn’t want Meghan at Balmoral Castle on the day that the late Queen Elizabeth II died, according to an excerpt obtained by the Daily Mail.  The Duke of Sussex then alleged in his memoir that he told the king, “Don’t ever speak about my wife that way.”
