Dee Dee Blanchard Taught Gypsy Rose How to Shoplift

Gypsy claimed that Dee Dee trained her to use her wheelchair in shoplifting schemes.

“Sitting in a wheelchair helps to more easily knock things into your lap and shove them under your princess dress,” she wrote. “My mother taught me the barcode swap: remove the barcode sticker from a cheaper item and place it on the more expensive one; then use the self-checkout lane.”

Gypsy also alleged that they didn’t need many of the items they stole, as she called Dee Dee a “hoarder.”

Dee Dee did not often let her daughter out of her sights — not even in the bath, Gypsy alleged. She wrote that Dee Dee often made Gypsy bathe wiith her, and she would shave Gypsy’s pubic hair to make her daughter “clean.”

Nick Godejohn Accused Gypsy Rose Blanchard of Cheating in Prison

Gypsy and her then-boyfriend, Nick Godejohn, conspired to kill Dee Dee and committed the crime together. After their arrest, they continued to date in county jail for another year. Gypsy admitted she was “pining for Nick” as they wrote secret notes to each other. However, Gypsy was then moved to Chillicothe Correctional Center, and their relationship fizzled out.

Gypsy moved on with a man named Ken, and she claimed that Nick wrote to her and accused her of adultery. She alleged that Nick told her they were married under “God’s law.” She said that she wrote back to her ex and told him she did not want to get back together.

Gypsy Claims Dee Dee Had Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Though it’s unclear if she was ever officially diagnosed, Gypsy claimed that her mother had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. These mental illnesses allegedly caused Dee Dee to “hear voices,” see “shapes and shadows” and claim she was a “powerful witch” who could use “spells.”

Dee Dee’s abuse of Gypsy was not only medical, according to her daughter. Gypsy wrote that her mom once beat her with a “dog leash” and then tied her to her bed with it for two weeks as a punishment.

Gypsy met Ken when he wrote to her during her incarceration. They got engaged in 2018 and planned for a 2020 wedding, but the engagement was called off a few months before they were going to exchange vows. The reason wasn’t clear until now. Gypsy claimed that Ken broke things off after Hulu’s The Act, a dramatized retelling of Gypsy’s life, was released in 2019.

“I was transformed into a pseudo-celebrity,” she wrote. “My personal life became public, which was really hard on Ken. Clickbait articles appeared mockingly announcing our engagement. Ken was a private person and didn’t want the attention or the scrutiny. While I understood and shared in his sentiment, I took it hard when he ended our relationship.”

A Fan Caused Gypsy to Be Sent to Solitary Confinement

Gypsy’s fame came with some consequences that were outside of her control. She claimed in her book that a fan once tweeted about wanting to get her out of prison, which sparked an investigation into potential plans for her escape. She was sent to solitary confinement for two weeks while the prison looked into it.

“[The fan] said something like, ‘She doesn’t belong in prison. I wish I could bust her out,’” she wrote, noting that her experience in confinement was “traumatizing.”

“I was in there for a solid two weeks while they went through my stuff looking for writings or plans or any correspondence that indicated I knew the person who posted. Which I didn’t,” she concluded.

Gypsy Has a 2nd Book and Follow-Up Docuseries Planned

Gypsy hinted at future plans for another book and a follow-up to the Lifetime documentary. She wrote, “As much as I have resisted the public role, it keeps finding me, in bigger, more transcendent ways. I know that doing two books, a Lifetime docuseries, and a follow-up series will look nothing like the private life I wish I had.”
