Sam and Citra first appeared on 90 Day Fiancé during the December 3, 2023, episode. The episode featured Citra arriving in the United States and revealing that her father, Herman, would be coming in a few days and staying for two weeks. Before Herman left to go back to Indonesia, Sam had to get his blessing to marry Citra. She also wanted to tie the knot while Herman was visiting so that he could see the wedding.

Sam admitted to struggling with drug addiction and opened up to Citra about his past before she arrived in the United States.

“Back when I was 15, I got addicted to pain medicine and I stayed addicted to it for quite a few years,” Sam explained in a confessional. “Being addicted to opiates … it makes you, like, a really cold, numb person. So I never had a real relationship that lasted and it made life really hard.”

Sam said he got “clean and sober” when he was 22 years old. He’d been clean for “almost ten years” when he filmed 90 Day Fiancé, but admitted to “relapsing a few times.” He added, “It’s more important than ever that I stay clean [now] because my fiancée is coming soon.”

While Citra was aware of Sam’s past with addiction, she was in the dark about his current legal problems after he was pulled over by cops with a coworker.

“They found my suboxone,” the TLC personality told producers in a private confessional, explaining that the drug is “kind of” an opiate but helped with withdrawal symptoms. “And because it wasn’t in a prescription bottle, they arrested me.”

In court, the judge offered him a diversion program — that included classes and drug tests — instead of time behind bars; however, he missed the deadline to apply.

“I could be facing jail time,” he continued. “So Citra knows about my addiction and the arrest, but she doesn’t know that me missing my deadline for the diversion could mean jail time.”

Sam intended to apply for a diversion program, according to a court docket entry that was submitted on June 13, 2023. The pre-trial program takes an intervention approach to “redirect youths away from formal processing in the juvenile justice system, while still holding them accountable for their actions,” according to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Program.

The season 10 star’s felony cocaine possession charge was dismissed on June 14, 2023. Meanwhile, the diversion was granted on October 10, 2023. However, the docket entry states the court was “awaiting signatures.”

In addition to Sam keeping secrets about his past, he also struggled with his and Citra’s different cultural backgrounds. She was raised to live a strict Muslim lifestyle and told Sam that he would have to convert to Islam for her family.

Part of Citra’s religious beliefs meant that she couldn’t indulge in premarital intimacy. Sam admitted that this was “not going to be easy” for him because he’s “horny.”

Upon Citra’s arrival in the United States during the December 10, 2023, episode, her first impression of Sam’s home was that it was “messy.” To make things worse, Citra found out that Sam may no longer qualify for the drug diversion program after missing the deadline. However, his fate wouldn’t be revealed until after their wedding date.

“It really make me angry because he lied about the paperwork to me and that means I lied to my dad about his paperwork, too,” Citra privately told producers during the December 17 episode. “If he doesn’t get diversion, it can make him go to jail. I mean, I just got here in America and then he’s going to leave me?”

Though Citra was upset about Sam not filling out his paperwork and didnt’t know what she would do if he went to jail, she told him during the January 7, 2024, episode that she would stay with him either way. She only hoped her father would be as understanding as she was.

Speaking of parental obstacles, Citra and Sam met with his mom during the same episode.
