As fans recall, Cate and Ty placed their oldest daughter for adoption in 2009 after documenting their first pregnancy on MTV’s16 and Pregnant.

At the time, Cate and Ty were teenagers living in an unstable home with Catelynn’s mother, April Brockmiller, and Tyler’s father, Butch Baltierra. Since April and Butch both struggled with substance abuse and Butch was constantly in and out of prison, Cate and Ty did not think it would be the best environment to raise their daughter.

So with the help of adoption counselor Dawn Baker, Catelynn and Tyler placed Carolyn “Carly” Elizabeth Davis with adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis. MTV cameras captured the emotional goodbye as Catelynn and Tyler said goodbye to Carly shortly after Cate gave birth.

But even though Cate and Ty opted for an open adoption, they still struggled with accepting the limited amount of interaction they had with Carly over the past 10 years, because ultimately Carly’s adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa, had the final say on whether they would allow Carly to visit, call or write to Catelynn and Tyler. But they’ve been lucky enough to visit with Carly almost every year since she was adopted.
