Although Jennifer Lopez and Shakira vowed to honor Kobe Bryant during their 2020 Super Bowl halftime show, fans were not impressed by their tribute, or lack thereof. Despite illuminating a yellow and purple cross during their performance, the nod to the fallen NBA star was missed by many. Several viewers took to Twitter to accuse the ladies of lying.

“So Jennifer Lopez and Shakira used that they were doing a tribute to Kobe Bryant as an excuse to get their views up during the halftime show, not only that but then they proceeded to do NO Kobe Bryant tribute like they said they would … but are we surprised?” one viewer wrote on Twitter with a meme which read “She has a disease. It’ called Lie-abetes.” Another added, “Stop lying … where is my Kobe tribute?” when responding to LeBron James tweet raving about the show.

For those who did catch the wink to the fallen athlete, many thought the ladies could have done more. “The cross at the end was purple and yellow. That was the tribute,” one user wrote, while another reiterated, “It would have made a significant difference, if your so-called ‘tribute,’ to Kobe was noticeable. You disappointed millions of people. Especially black, and brown people. Shame on you, both!!!”

During a press conference prior to the game on Thursday, January 30, the Latin women promised to give a “heartfelt” tribute to Kobe and his daughter Gianna. The two tragically died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, January 26.

“I think we will all be remembering Kobe on Sunday. We’ll be celebrating life and celebrating diversity in this country,” Shakira, 43, said at the time. The beauties were hoping to “spread love and kindness and bring everybody together,” with their performance.

Although many were disappointed by their tribute to Kobe, several still raved about their song and dance. “Erm [sic] can we just talk about how J. Lo and Shakira absolutely smashed that performance! 😍#HalftimeShow2020,” one fan expressed on Twitter. “Can’t get over it,” another said.
