A sense of normalcy. Granger Smith‘s wife, Amber, shared photos from a trip to a pumpkin patch she took with her kids on the first Halloween they’re spending together after their son River’s tragic death. “Pumpkin patchin’ 🎃 had to throw in last year’s of Riv too ❤️ 😇,” she began a post on October 26. She then described a toy her other son seemed to be playing with in some of the photos, writing, “Right before we got to the patch, Lincoln bought a ‘mashem.’ If you don’t know what these are, kids love them. Little surprise squishy things inside a little plastic container. Linc is holding one in his pic. When he opened it, it was Lightning McQueen 🚗.”

River died at just 3 years old in a drowning accident in June 2019. Granger, 40, broke the news on Twitter. “I have to deliver unthinkable news,” the singer wrote. “We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctors’ best efforts, he was unable to be revived. Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father.”

Amber, 37, shared that her other kids seem to be coping OK in the wake of the terrible loss. “One of the many things I’m so thankful for in this process is how our kiddos are handling everything,” she wrote on Instagram on September 23, while offering a few drawings done by her kids. “They both are creating, and their pictures are of them smiling and happy. Even in our darkest hour, they are creating happy pictures.”

She added, “Not that it would be bad if they were frowning or crying in the art, because it’s OK to be sad, we are all sad. But it makes my heart happy that they are creating happy photos, happy memories with River … Thanking God for these little bits of happy through the tears ❤️🙏🏼 🖍.”

On the pumpkin patch post, fans were clearly feeling Amber’s pain and shared words of comfort. “My heart breaks for your family, I can’t imagine the pain you go through daily,” one person wrote. “Sending lots of love, light and comfort during a holiday that can be painful for you all ❤️.” We couldn’t agree more and hope that the family’s hearts are healing.
