Looks like some fans don’t agree with Jill Duggar that her husband, Derick Dillard, is the #besthubbyever. After the couple celebrated Mother’s Day over the weekend, the father-of-two faced hate from followers on Instagram. The star had shared a blog post as a tribute to his wife, titling it, “Portrait of a Godly Mother,” but had neglected to make an Instagram post to advertise it. On May 12, when a fan noticed that he hadn’t posted anything on the social media site, they assumed he hadn’t posted anything at all — and they took him to task for it.

“Why don’t you post a happy Mother’s Day post for your wife?” they asked in the comments section of an unrelated photo Derick, 30, had shared. “I mean, she carried YOUR CHILDREN in her body for 9 months and had to have a C-section (which is a major surgery) for both of them. Selfish and ungrateful of a husband, much?” But the star wasn’t having it.

In response, he fired back, “When I post something, people say, ‘Why don’t you tell her yourself instead of posting it.’ And when [I] don’t post, people say, ‘You’re ungrateful.’ … Can’t please everyone.” But even that didn’t silence his critics. In another comment, the fan continued, “It’s just sad how you didn’t do a happy Mother’s Day post or how you rarely post about your wife. You can’t please everyone, which is correct, but at least put in some effort as a husband.” For that, Derick had one simple answer: “I did make a happy Mother’s Day post for my mom and wife on my blog.”

By this point, the former Counting On star is likely used to dealing with trolls on social media. After seemingly implying that romantics should settle so that they don’t “just die single” waiting for the “perfect person,” he faced his fair share of hate. When he picked up dinner for his family, another commenter congratulated him on “doing the bare minimum.” And, of course, who can forget the backlash he dealt with after attacking Jazz Jennings again and again on Twitter?

Derick regularly posts pictures and captions that make us say, “WTF?” In this case, though, we have to give him a pass. You really can’t please everyone, can you? But just in case you can, the star followed up this interaction by posting another Instagram. On May 13, a day late, he posted a picture from a sushi dinner date with his wife. “Happy Mother’s Day, Jill! I always enjoy our weekly sushi date … and really any other time I’m blessed to spend with you! ;)” Making sure to highlight the next part, he continued, “***Special Mother’s Day post on the blog.*** Check out www.dillardfamily.com or click the link in my bio.”
