Welcome to Plathville Star Olivia Clashes With Mother-in-Law
TLC (2)

Tensions are already rising on TLC’s new six-part series Welcome to Plathville. In a sneak peek for the Tuesday, November 12 episode, mother-in-law Kim Plath doesn’t see eye to eye with her new daughter-in-law, Olivia, and it looks like they’re in for a battle.

Kim and Barry Plath are the parents to Ethan, 21, Hosanna, 20, Micah, 18, Moriah, 16, Lydia, 15, Isaac, 13, Amber, 10, Cassie, 8 and Mercy, 6. Ethan is married to Olivia, who was raised in a conservative family, but not as conservative as the Plaths. As Olivia is about to take Moriah on a trip to California, she is nervous her new family will put a damper on their trip.

“Moriah is so excited. And I’m really excited to go back because I love San Fransisco,” Olivia said in the teaser. “But when I approached Kim about it she was very hesitant because they don’t trust me and they don’t trust Moriah. They know I have different values and different priorities than them.”

Olivia admitted she and her mother-in-law aren’t on the best of terms. “I have felt very negative about Kim,” she shared. “Because even when Ethan and I were dating, I was criticized for what kind of toothpaste I used, or what I ate, or what I wore, or what I did. I feel like I was constantly critiqued. Literally every time I get in my car to go over there, my stomach is in knots.”

Kim knew her relationship with her daughter-in-law needs improvement, but she saw things a little differently. “There’s been tension with Olivia and I for a long time because she thinks I’m too controlling,” she explained in a private interview. “There were things, when they were engaged, that I know she thinks that I disapproved of, but I really didn’t. And the thing is, she never asked me. She never talked to me about it. I’ve just kind of accepted that as par for the course.”

The mom of nine is different from your average, as she and her husband raised their nine kids away from traditional society in rural Georgia. They use limited technology and absolutely no “carbonated sodas.” All their rules aside, Kim insisted that she isn’t too tough. “I’m hoping that letting Moriah go on this trip, that Olivia will see that I’m not this mean person that wants to make her life miserable,” Kim said. We guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Welcome to Plathville airs on TLC on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET.
