Well, hello there! Joe Jonas hit the red carpet at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 27, in LA — where he debuted some questionable facial hair. The 28-year-old DNCE frontman sported a thick mustache that makes him look more like a porn star from the 70s rather than a pop star.

Aside from his unfortunate stache (that, BTW, is giving us major Ron Jeremy vibes), Joe’s retro VMAs look was also comprised of a white blazer with sparkly lavender accents. We all know the Jonas Brothers alum is hot AF, so we’ll let this ill-advised fashion moment slide. Though we’re giving the “Cake by the Ocean” singer a pass, many of his fans certainly aren’t.

“I love joe jonas so much but why does he have a porn stache omg,” one devastated fan wrote, while another asked the question that’s on everybody’s mind at the moment: “Are Calvin Harris and Joe Jonas part of some ugly mustache cult?”

Another critic of Joe’s look didn’t hold back one bit while describing Joe’s new (creepy?) aesthetic. “I guess pedophile is the new look for Joe Jonas,” the Twitter user quipped, while another agreed with us that the former boy bander does indeed resemble Mr. Jeremy. “Why does Joe Jonas look like Ron Jeremy now? I mean WTF.”

WTF is right. But the best thing about hideous mustaches is that they can be quickly shaved off in a matter of seconds. Right, Joe? But TBH, no matter what we (or his fans) think about Joe’s stache, we’re just happy the guy has the freedom to finally grow one out. In a first-person essay written for Vulture in 2013, the New Jersey native revealed how the Disney Channel monitored his facial hair while he was filming Jonas, his sitcom with brothers Kevin and Nick Jonas, from 2009 to 2010.

“I had to shave every day because they wanted me to pretend like I was 16 when I was 20 (when the show was done, I cut my hair off and grew as much of a beard as I could),” he explained at the time. “We went along with it at the time, because we thought Disney was our only real shot, and we were terrified that it could all be taken away from us at any moment.”
