Although most choose to live with their significant other prior to saying “I do,” it’s not for everyone. Gwyneth Paltrow moved in with her husband Brad Falchuk after nearly a year of marriage, and she says their unconventional living arrangement was the result of their angsty teens.

“I think because we each have two teenage children, whom we love very much, we were just trying to be mindful and give them a little space and not move too quickly,” the 48-year-old said on the Tuesday, October 2 episode Jimmy Kimmel Live. “Now we’re merged and it’s great.”

The newlyweds married in September 2018 in a private ceremony in the Hamptons. The intimate event was full A-listers and family. Gwyn is mom to two kids Apple, 15, and Moses, 13, whom she shares with her ex-husband Chris Martin. As for Brad, 48, he is the dad to Isabella and Brody from his previous marriage to Suzanne Bukinik.

Prior to living under the same roof, she told The Sunday Times back in June that her man, 48, would spend three nights a week at his own home and four nights a week at hers in Los Angeles. Although not the norm, Gwyn was totally comfortable with their arrangement. “Oh, all my married friends say that the way we live sounds ideal, and we shouldn’t change a thing,” she said. The actress also added that her intimacy teacher, Michaela Boehm, approved of their living situation her that it gives the marriage “polarity.”

As the blending of two families was totally new to the Goop founder, she was more nervous to merge her family than sharing a bathroom with her man. “We are still doing it in our own way. With teenage kids, you’ve got to tread lightly. It’s pretty intense, the teenage thing,” she told WSJ. Magazine back in December 2018. “I’ve never been a stepmother before. I don’t know how to do it.”

It seems like doing things her way was the right move. “For me, it has been more of a process, and so I feel really lucky to have met this person who is an incredible, true partner.”
