Gone too soon. Cameron Boyce’s parents are speaking out for the first time since the Disney Channel star suddenly died at just 20 years old.

“There are no words to describe how moved we are by the tremendous outpouring of love and support from our family, friends and the world,” his mom, Libby Boyce, and his dad, Victor Boyce, shared in a statement to E! News on Wednesday, July 10. “Thank you, everyone, for encircling us with your love and respect of Cameron and concern for our family. He was the definition of human kindness, and a light that will forever shine as his spirit lives on in all who knew and loved him. He was the rock of our family, and he always had a positive, heartwarming, insightful and caring outlook on everything and everyone.”

His parents ended the message on a positive note, though. “The pain we have endured and are continuing to endure is indescribable, but we are making every effort to move forward and ensure that Cameron’s legacy and all that he stood for is honored,” they added. “He was and is so cherished, and we will hold him in our hearts forever. He is our shooting star.”

Following Cameron’s tragic death, Victor took to Twitter to share his gratitude for all the warm messages he has gotten. “I’m overwhelmed with the love and support our family has received,” he said. “It really does help to ease the pain of this nightmare I can’t wake up from. I can’t thank you guys enough.”

On Saturday, July 6, the Boyce family released a statement about the Jessie alum. “It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron,” a spokesperson for the family told Us Weekly at the time. “He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure, which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated. The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him. We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother.”

Of course, many of Cameron’s friends and castmates paid tribute to the California native on social media. “I’ve been unsuccessful thinking about trying to summarize something where there are no adequate words in the England language,” Dove Cameron — who starred opposite Cameron in the Descendants — wrote. “Over the last six years, since he was only 14, Cameron talked me down from countless ledges, talked me through eating disorders, helped me out of dark relationships and through endless break downs. I can’t count the amount of times on my hands we ruined something because we couldn’t stop making each other laugh.”

Adam Sandler also gushed about his Grown Ups costar. “Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented and most decent kid around,” he wrote. “Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All of our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.”
