You never know when an old photo of yourself will become a meme. Just ask Ermagerd Girl, Disaster Girl, or Bad Luck Brian.

Some meme stars thrived on their Internet fame, like Alex From Target. Others, like Hipster Barista or Ridiculously Photogenic Guy, didn't think so highly of going viral.

Ermahgerd Girl

Maggie Goldenberger, the infamous Ermahgerd Girl, was working as a nurse in Phoenix, AZ, in 2015, when Vanity Fair caught up with her. She had been traveling through India with her then-girlfriend when she learned of her Internet notoriety in 2012. "I just can't believe this is my 15 minutes of fame," she told the magazine. "I was hoping it would come in another form. But I guess you have to take what you can get."

Alex From Target

After a teen shopper captured Alex LaBeouf looking photogenic while working at Target, the viral star left high school and went on tour to cash in on his fame. These days, he's going to school to become an EMT, as he tells J-14 , and he's been posting tons of gym videos to Instagram lately.

Disaster Girl

Zoe Roth was a 16-year-old honor student when Refinery29 interviewed her in 2016. And she insisted she's not a pyromaniac: She was just a 4-year-old spectating a fire in her neighborhood. "I’d love for the meme to help me get into or pay for college somehow," she said. "But I ultimately want people to know me for me."

Sheltering Suburban Mom

Carly Phillips is a romance novelist whose author portrait was hijacked for the Sheltering Suburban Mom meme. In real life, however, Carly not be sheltering enough. "I was the mom who let them watch R-rated movies young, and the other parents would be frustrated with me for that," she has said, per The Daily Dot.

Hipster Barista

"That’s the first and last scarf I've ever owned," Dustin Mattison told the New Statesman in 2017. He was working at a café that required its staff to have portraits taken for the website, and tried to look "as angry as possible" when the photographer asked for a serious post. Now, he's working as a barista and customer support representative for Counter Culture Coffee, and he swears he's not pretentious about the java.

Ridiculously Photogenic Guy

Zeddie Little was running the 10K Bridge Run in Charleston, SC, in 2012 when a stranger snapped a photo of him beaming right at the camera. (He had just spotted his girlfriend in the crowd, apparently, but his smile made him a meme subject. On Good Morning America, Zeddie said, "I kind of feel honored to be part of like a joke that’s in good spirits … It's, I guess, the most flattering way to get spread across the Internet." These days, Zeddie is living in Brooklyn… and still running marathons.

Laina Morris posted a Justin Bieber tribute video as a joke in 2012, and a screenshot from that video made her a viral star. Now she has channeled that Internet fame into a comedy YouTube channel with nearly 1.3 million subscribers. And in one video, she went on a date with…

Bad Luck Brian

His name isn't actually Bryan, it's Kyle. Kyle Craven, to be exact, who now he works as a project manager for his father's construction company in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. In 2015, he told The Washington Post he intentionally was trying to take the most un-photogenic yearbook photo possible. And he said he's happy to be a viral star: "It’s something to show my grandkids one day, right?"
