Not everyone’s experience on My 600-lb Life was a positive one. Just look at Cynthia Wells‘ journey to a healthier body. She surprisingly ignored her doctor’s advice to see a therapist after her weight loss surgery. Instead, she insisted that she didn’t need any therapy because she didn’t have an emotional connection to food.

“I’ve decided to stop trying to live up to everyone’s expectations for me, including Dr. Nowzaradan,” she told the camera. “I’ve decided if he’s pushing me for therapy, I don’t need to see him right now. [I don’t] need him trying to make connections that aren’t there. He can’t help me at this point. I just think I have to do it on my own right now.”

Still, the show revealed that she was able to lose 156 pounds in about a year going from 610 pounds to 454 pounds. She changed her diet and worked on eating smaller portions as well. However, she struggled because she blamed her weight gain on her unfortunate circumstances. She did attend one post-surgical session, but it didn’t go well.

“Today was a bit of a waste of time in my opinion,” Cynthia said after the session. “I don’t need this kind of help. I need real help.” Therapist Dr. Ashley Bryant added, “She has built this strong and tough exterior that I’m afraid may be a barrier to her.”

Her episode aired in January, and according to her Facebook, she is keeping the weight off. “Cynthia you are looking so good I am proud of you keep up the good work because you are doing great,” her friend commented on her profile photo in October. We hope she’s able to stay healthy!
