In the February 25 episode of Teen Mom 2, there are some serious developments happening in Chelsea Houska‘s complicated, blended family. With Adam Lind not stepping up to the plate for daughter Aubree, the mom-of-three is talking about what that means for her and Cole DeBoer, especially with the revelation that her ex recently gave up his parental rights to his other daughter, Paislee, with his ex Taylor Halbur. We all know that Cole is a fantastic dad to Aubree.

Back in January 2018, Chelsea’s eldest daughter even took Cole’s last name, legally becoming Aubree Lind-DeBoer. “They surprised her with a cake that had ‘Aubree Lind-DeBoer’ on it,” a source close to the family told Ashley’s Reality Roundup. “Aubree was so thrilled and it was adorable.”

But technically, Cole is just her step-dad.

He’s been helping raise her since he and Chelsea became serious, and even revealed in an Instagram Q&A that he would “100 percent” adopt her if given the chance, he hasn’t had that opportunity just yet.

That may change soon.

In the Teen Mom clip, Chelsea revealed that Aubree’s dad, Adam, missed two of his scheduled supervised visitations with his daughter — and so the rest were cancelled.

Adam hasn’t been involved in his daughter’s life for a while.

In the reunion episode that aired in August 2018, Chelsea said, “I’m grateful that [Aubree] has someone like Cole [DeBoer]. You know, who has gone above and beyond, but there’s no doubt that [Adam’s behavior] has to hurt her, will hurt her, deep down someday.”

She worries what it will be like for Aubree to watch the show.

“She’s going to see the relationship with her dad and she’s going to have a lot of questions,” the 27-year-old worried. “She is open with me and can talk to me so I just want to keep it that way so for when [she does] watch it, she feels comfortable and won’t have any surprises.”

Adam has a similar relationship with his other daughter.

Paislee’s mom, Taylor, married her husband, Joe Leonard, in August 2017, and, like Cole, he’s really stepped up to help take care of his step-daughter.

But Aubree’s half-sister’s family is changing.

In the new Teen Mom episode, Chelsea revealed to Cole and one of the show’s producers that she just talked to Taylor and found out that they’d had some pretty big legal developments.

Chelsea fills them in in the kitchen.

“Yesterday I got a phone call from Taylor. She said that her and Adam had court and he gave up rights to their daughter, Paislee. … He can’t see her at all,” she told them. “The judge said, ‘You realize this is forever?’ to him and he said, ‘Yeah.'”

Adam was surprised, but not shocked.

“That’s rock bottom. Like, look at this, do you think anything would ever come between this? F–k, like, yeah right,” he said, looking down at his daughter, Layne, who he was holding in his arms. “How could you have this, watch them grow up, and then be like, ‘Op’? F–k that.”

But that means that Joe can be Paislee’s dad.

“[Taylor’s] husband, I guess, adopted Paislee now, and that’s that,” Chelsea told her crew — which brought up the topic of their own family. “Do we bring up that it’s an option for [Aubree] as well?” the mom asked.

Cole was all on board for that plan.

“I’d [adopt her] right now if she wants,” Cole says when asked if he’d do the same. “[But] I would never make her do anything.” But Chelsea is worried it won’t be that easy.

She has her daughter’s best interests at heart.

But it’s a complicated situation. “I feel like the best [thing] for her would be if he was just completely out of the picture instead of in and out, hurting her,” she said. “But I think she’s old enough now to where you can’t just make that decision for her.”

We’re not sure yet how things will turn out.

Though it’s clear Cole would do just about anything for Aubree — and that, no matter what the case is legally, she’s his daughter to him — things are messy with Adam.

The parents may leave the choice up to Aubree.

It seems that Chelsea and Cole agree that their daughter should have a major say in a decision like this — assuming that Adam would be equally willing to relinquish his parental rights.
