‘Insecure’ Star Yvonne Orji Isn’t Insecure About Being a 33-Year-Old Virgin!

Yvonne Orji is getting real with her fans! The Insecure star, 33, recently opened up to People about her personal life and admitted that she's a dedicated Christian who's saving herself for marriage.

Although her character, Molly, is television's resident bad girl, IRL, she's nothing like her character. The Nigerian-born star — who emigrated to the United States when she was 6 years old — said, "I wasn’t going to hide it just because I’m on TV." She added, "I’m grounded in who I am." Yasss, girl! "Before any of [the fame] happened, I sat down with myself and with God and thought, 'When I make it, how do you want me to represent you while I’m here?'" She said she answered her own question: "It was like, OK, I know why I’m here. It’s to make you proud."

Deciding to be an actress was not an easy decision for Yvonne, whose parents came to the US with dreams of their daughter becoming a doctor. "It was the traditional immigrant story of my parents wanting the best for us and bringing us here." Yet it wasn't always easy growing up in Maryland. "I was bullied because I have this thick Nigerian accent. My mom would say, 'We didn’t come to America for you to be popular.' Which is fair, but as a kid, you’re just like, it would be really nice to have this thing that everyone else has." As for being a doctor? "It sounded noble," she said. "But then I took organic chemistry and I was like, 'Well, maybe not.' I ended up getting my master’s degree in public health and then working in war-torn Liberia to stall from crushing my parents' hopes and dreams."

Yet in order to be truly happy, she decided she needed to talk to her parents. "'It would take me eight years to become a doctor, but give me eight years to make it in entertainment,'" she recalled telling her family. "And I’m happy to say, I did it in seven!"
