Talk about a unique take on a nickname! Bringing Up Bates fans may be wondering why Tori Bates’ newborn son is nicknamed Kade when his name is really Robert, but there’s actually a good reason behind the interesting choice.

During an episode of Bringing Up Bates, “Blue or Pink, What Do You Think?” Tori and her husband, Bobby Smith, found out they were going to have a baby boy, and settled on the name Robert Ellis Smith IV. That may seem like quite the mouthful for a baby, but no worries, because the parents also had a nickname in mind: Kade. Their reasoning? Bobby says it’s Latin for “fourth generation.” Apparently they didn’t want to go with something more commonplace, like Robby, Bert, or Bob, for their new little boy.

Tori and Bobby got married less than a year ago, and already welcomed their first child together on Friday, Nov 9. He was born at 7:45 a.m. at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN, and was born weighing 6 pounds and 1 ounce, and is 18 inches long. Back when the couple first announced that they were expecting to Us Weekly, Tori told the outlet, “We’re having a baby!! We are thrilled that God has blessed us with this amazing privilege, and we cannot wait to meet our precious little gift from Him.” Now, Kade is here, and the parents couldn’t be happier.

As for his name, Tori and Bobby told Entertainment Tonight on June 21 that they had already decided to call him Kade before he was born. And when it comes to the Latin connection behind that name, it’s not entirely clear where Tori and Bobby got their information. According to Baby Name Wizard, the name Cade, “is derived from an Old English nickname for something or someone lumpy or rotund.” It’s possibly also from the Late Middle English cade, described as “a young animal abandoned by its mother and raised by hand.” That second meaning makes it kind of an odd choice for a newborn.

Baby Center also reported that Kade means round, and Behind the Name is in agreement. Word Reference reported, however, that “the root -quad- comes from Latin, where it has the meaning ‘four, fourth,'” so maybe that’s what Bobby meant by the Latin connection.

Whatever Kade actually means, it’s certainly a cute name, and a unique one in a super-sized family that is likely to be flooded with tons of grandkids. It can’t hurt to have him stand out a little.
