Most Scandalous Grammy Moments Over The Years

Will Smith And DJ Jazzy Jeff

In 1989, Will Smith boycotted the Grammy Awards with his music partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff, after they found out that the Best Rap Performance category would not be televised. Even though the duo didn’t attend the award show, they won for their hit song “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”

Milli Vanilli

Yikes! The R&B duo won the award for Best New Artist for their song, “Girl You Know It’s True” in 1990, but eight months later, it was revealed that the pair lip-synched. For the first time ever, their award was taken away.

Bob Dylan

An unplanned performance! At the 1998 Grammys, Michael Portnoy surprisingly joined Bob Dylan on stage while he was half-naked with the words “Soy Bomb” painted on his chest. Fortunately, the singer continued the show and it didn’t even look like it bothered him.

Wu Tang Clan And Shawn Colvin

Way before Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Wu Tang Clan got on stage while Shawn Colvin accepted the award for “Sunny Came Home” at the 1998 Grammy awards. “Puffy is good, but Wu-Tang is the best,” one of the members announced.

Eminem And Elton John

Who would have ever thought we would see this pair together? In 2001, the LGBT community was not happy when Eminem rapped homophobic lyrics on his album The Marshall Mathers LP. The Missouri native was announced as a performer at the 2001 Grammys, but the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation protested the decision. To repair the damage, Eminem performed his song “Stan” with Elton John, and the pair hugged it out on stage afterward.

OutKast

At the 2004 Grammys, OutKast performed their hit song “Hey Ya” on stage, however, Andre 3000‘s performance featured Native American outfits that people were not happy with. CBS later apologized for the band.

Justin Timberlake

After Janet Jackson’s nipple was exposed at Super Bowl XXXVIII, Justin Timberlake had to apologize for the wardrobe malfunction in order to attend the 2004 Grammys. The Tennessee native won for Best Pop Performance for his single, “Cry Me a River,” but his apology sounded a bit awkward. “What occurred was unintentional, completely regrettable and I apologize if you guys were offended,” he said.

Chris Brown And Rihanna

Nothing is ever what it seems. Rihanna and Chris Brown attended the Clive Davis Grammy pre-party together in 2009, but the couple made headlines the day of the Grammys when everyone learned that Brown had assaulted Rihanna in the car the night before. As a result, the former couple didn’t end up going to the show that year.

Taylor Swift And Stevie Nicks

At the 2010 Grammys, Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac invited Taylor Swift on stage to sing “Rhiannon,” but the performance was not great as the Pennsylvania native sang off key and didn’t hit some high notes in the song.

Whitney Houston passed away one day before the 2012 Grammy awards, and the mood in the room was anything but uplifting. Jennifer Hudson sang her iconic hit, “I Will Always Love You” as a tribute to the singer.

Macklemore shocked everyone when they beat Kendrick Lamar at the 2014 Grammys. Many viewers expressed their feelings on social media and even claimed they didn’t deserve any of the awards. Macklemore texted the rapper saying, “I wanted you to win. You should have.”
