Nova’s dad found himself in some majorly hot water the last time Teen Mom 2 star Briana DeJesus let him watch his daughter, but it seems like Devoin Austin is finally getting a second chance. In a clip from the new episode, the MTV dad gets the chance to hang out with his kid — and he wants to make sure that she understands just what happened. Devoin coming over may not have been a surprise to Nova, 8, but it was a long time coming. Back in April, the dad had a major falling out with his daughter’s mom that lead to him losing out on chances to spend time with her.

Though she’s not ready to see her ex herself — and had her mom, Roxanne, stay with Nova while Devoin came over — she recognized that it was important for her daughter to have a relationship with her dad.

As Devoin and Nova settled in to play games, however, he wanted to have a serious conversation with her. “Remember last time I [saw] you?” he asked her. “We went to the pool.”

Nothing actually happened at the pool, but while Devoin was watching Nova, he had a couple of drinks. The problem is that his daughter doesn’t know how to swim.

When Briana came to pick up her daughter, she was furious to realize that her ex was impaired, seemingly worried that he wouldn’t have been able to help if Nova had fallen into the water.

The parents hashed it out at the reunion taping, but the Teen Mom star was still upset. After she got home, she tweeted about wishing she could drop her kids off at their dads’ and take a break.

Unfortunately, she felt like her exes wouldn’t be able to handle the responsibility. When a fan suggested that Devoin could, she shot back, “No he couldn’t. He f–ked up big time, and I’ll never trust him again.”

Eventually, a fan who’d been at the reunion taping spilled the tea, revealing what she was talking about. “[Devoin] got really drunk on one of Nova’s visits, which was supposed to be an overnight,” they claimed.

“They were at a pool while he was drunk, and apparently Nova can’t swim. Bri picked Nova up – nothing happened to her, but now Bri isn’t comfortable with Nova going there alone.”

Eventually, Devoin attempted to clear the air himself. “I had two drinks while watching my child and it hit me terribly. So I was tipsy when she came to pick up Nova. I’m the worst father ever y’all,” he snarked.

But despite not being able to see his daughter, the dad made sure to clarify that he continuing to care for her in the one way he could. “I’m still doing my part financially,” he said.

That doesn’t mean he was taking everything in stride. “Briana [is] making it seem like I loaded guns in front of Nova lol,” he continued. “I just learned that I don’t ever wanna have a drink around my child if I’m alone. It’s a lesson. I learned.”

It seems Nova’s mom learned her lesson, too — this time, she’s not leaving Nova alone with the dad. But it’s clear Devoin still appreciates having the opportunity to rebuild his relationship.

“Me and your mom weren’t really happy with each other,” he admits in the clip. “It was my fault. … I messed up. … But that’s why you haven’t seen me for so long. It’s been a month.”
