After countless comments about her weight flooded her social media, Sarah Hyland is speaking out about her health and telling her story.
For fans wondering, or rudely asking, what is “wrong” with the Modern Family star on Instagram, the 26-year-old revealed she has been on bed rest for the past few months and unable to exercise, which has resulted in a noticeable loss of muscle mass.
“I haven’t had the greatest year…” she started a series of notes she posted on Twitter. “I have been told that I can’t work out, which, for me, is very upsetting. I am an activist for activity… I love to be outdoors. I love to be STRONG… I am not a fan of ‘being skinny.'”
She also called out her body shamers, who continually tell her to “eat a burger” or remind her that her “head is bigger than your body” and assured fans she was not ‘promoting” anorexia with photos of her frail frame.
“My circumstances have put me in a place where I’m not in control of what my body looks like,” she continued. “Oh, and no that’s not Photoshop. Those are my legs. Those are my arms. I write this because I’ve been accused of promoting anorexia… and I want girls to know that that’s not my intention. So I am here to say that no one should aim to be the weight that I am right now.”
As a young child, the brunette beauty was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia and in 2012 she received a kidney transplant from her father.
“You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what,” she told Seventeen magazine.”My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney! But it’s also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you’re friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.”
Sarah, who is currently taking the steroid prednisone, also shared that along with her weight loss the medication that is “saving her life” can also cause her to look swollen.
“My self-confidence is not rendered from your comments,” she wrote. “Because I will always be too fat. I will always be too skinny. I will never have enough curves to be called a woman. And I will alway be a slut for wearing a push-up bra.”
She continued, “I am a 26-year-old woman who goes through more than you could even imagine on a daily basis. But I work hard. I love hard. And I got where I am because I am STRONG and didn’t give up. I am grateful for the life I live ad you should be too. Don’t let other’s comments alter any part of you.”
Stay STRONG, Sarah!
