Defending her man! Hailey Baldwin responded to fans ‘belittling” Justin Bieber‘s Lyme disease diagnosis. The singer announced his health struggle on January 8 and revealed that he has been battling the disease — which is contracted from the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria found in infected ticks — and it had been a “rough couple of years.” After he was met with some skepticism, his wife took to Twitter to slam those who were spreading hate.

“For those who are trying to downplay the severity of Lyme disease. Please do your research and listen to the stories of people who have suffered with it for years. Making fun of and belittling a disease you don’t understand is never the way, all it takes is educating yourself,” the 23-year-old began in a series of tweets.

Justin, 25, isn’t the only celebrity who has come forward with Lyme disease. Avril Lavigne, Yolanda, Bella and Gigi Hadid are also open about living with the condition. Hailey and the pop star have clearly sought advice from others and the model was sure to thank her A-list pals.

“I wanna say a huge thank you to @YolandaHadid and  @bellahadid and @GiGiHadid for bringing me so much clarity and information on Lyme disease and for helping answer my questions about course of action, symptoms etc. Love you 3 amazing women!” Hailey added. “And sending so much love to @AvrilLavigne thank you for all you do to educate people about Lyme. You’re amazing.”

The New York native was also met with backlash while trying to defend her husband. Fans of Selena Gomez, who suffers from lupus, flooded her responses and slammed Hailey over allegedly making fun of the former Wizards of Waverly Place star. Commenters claimed that Hailey once called the singer “Selupus” on social media.

“Aww seems like something the woman you yourself bullied had to go through for years at the hands of Justin’s fan base. Except Lyme disease isn’t even close to Lupus,” one person wrote. “Please, tell your fans to not make fun of lupus, too. Thank you,” someone else added. “This is the first time I actually agree. HOWEVER, keep that same energy for your own fans who were making fun of Selena’s Lupus FOR YEARS and continue to do so. You never spoke up against that, which is very sad. But again, no one should make fun of diseases and just be respectful,” another user added.

As far as his health concerns, Justin seems like he has a positive attitude. He opened up on Instagram and called out his haters and explained why he had been seen with an IV bag in public. “While a lot of people kept saying Justin Bieber looks like s–-t, on meth, etc., they failed to realize I’ve been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease,” he explained. “Not only that, but [I] had a serious case of chronic mono which affected my, skin, brain function, energy and overall health. These things will be explained further in a docuseries I’m putting on YouTube shortly. You can learn all that I’ve been battling and OVERCOMING!! It’s been a rough couple years, but [I’m] getting the right treatment that will help treat this so far incurable disease, and I will be back and better than ever. NO CAP.”
