It’s so sweet how Farrah Abraham and her daughter, Sophia, keep Derek Underwood‘s memory alive — especially on his birthday. Derek, who was Farrah’s high school boyfriend and the nine-year-old’s father, passed away in 2008 before his daughter was born. Today, May 8, would have been his 28th birthday. On Dec. 28, 2008, Derek was driving with two friends in Council Bluffs, IA, after their car skidded and hit a pole. His friend Zachary Mendoza was also tragically killed in the accident. Farrah recalled the unfortunate events in her 2012 best-selling novel, My Teenage Dream Ended.

“I got off the phone and I tried to calm down, but my mind was racing. Derek was the father of the baby I was carrying inside me,” she wrote. “We hadn’t spoken in more than two months, but crazily I had still hoped we had a future together — me, him, and our baby, as one happy family. It’s every teenage girl’s dream, isn’t it?” It was recently announced that My Teenage Dream Ended will turn into a movie — which is bound to be an emotional roller coaster.

The Furnished by Farrah owner also opened up to In Touch back in 2016 about reflecting on the anniversary of his death every year. “Sophia’s dad was lost around Christmas, the 28th comes up every year for me,” she shared. “And I went through depression and a hard time and Sophia, as a child, has gone through her own [struggle, asking], ‘What happened to my dad?’ And having her own loss.” Our continued thoughts are with Derek’s fans and loved ones.
