‘Teen Mom OG’ Star Maci Bookout Admits She Enjoys The “Occasional Cigarette”
They’re baaaack! Teen Mom OG stars Maci Bookout, Amber Portwood, Catelynn Lowell, and Farrah Abraham have returned for Season 7, and fans already have questions about the reality TV mamas.
After her ex-boyfriend, Ryan Edwards, was seen driving under the influence earlier this year, people have begun wondering if Maci has substance abuse issues of her own. The mother-of-three has been open about the fact that she enjoys a Bud Light every now and then, but she recently revealed in her new book, I Wasn’t Born Bulletproof: Lessons I’ve Learned (So You Don’t Have To) that she smokes too. “While obviously I don’t condone excessive drinking, having a beer — or even smoking the occasional cigarette — does not warrant a call to Child Services, and it does not make you a bad mother,” she wrote in her book released June 27.
In recent years, though, Maci has made no effort to hide the fact that she and her husband of one year, Taylor McKinney, frequently drink, with alcohol often appearing in her Teen Mom OG scenes. Maci wrote that when Taylor posted a photo on Instagram of her drinking a beer while holding her then-newborn daughter Jayde, followers slammed the 26-year-old.
“The reaction that followed was intense,” Maci wrote, according to Radar Online. “People accused me of being a horrible, negligent mother; of drinking too much; of putting my newborn in mortal danger.” She added, “It’s one beer, folks, I am an adult, over the legal drinking age and just because I’m a mom doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a beer on a Sunday evening with my husband. Newsflash: Mothers are human beings. We are flawed, hard-working, well-intentioned, exhausted individuals; we do our best, we make mistakes, but above all we love our children.”
While most of the Teen Mom cast members have been shown drinking at some point during the show, fans have argued that Maci and Taylor drink to an excessive level. The controversy surrounding Maci’s frequent indulging increased significantly when it was discovered that Maci was photographed drinking throughout most of her third pregnancy. Although Maci claimed she didn’t know she was pregnant during some of that time, she was seen sporting a baby bump in some photos taken during the pregnancy. “I never pay attention to any of the comments or press or anything like that, I never have,” Maci recently dished. “It’s kind of just a dark hole that I don’t want to get into, but you know, it was more important for me to know that everything with Maverick and the pregnancy was okay and that there were going to be no complications or issues,” she said.
In a recent Facebook Q&A, a fan asked Taylor, 28, about how much alcohol the couple consumes. “We love us some [Bud Lights]. We can [have fun without alcohol]… but no good story started with a glass of milk,” the dad-of-two wrote. Well, that’s not really a great answer, but hey — let ’em live!
