Arr, matey! Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp aren’t the only actors who’ve famously played pirates, although the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may be the most well-known in the genre. What about Cary Elwes? And Hugh Jackman — that’s right, he’s done the swashbuckling thing, too! In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, we rounded up a whole list of celebrities who have played pirates, whether they did so in movies, TV shows, cartoons or even a music video. Cary Elwes

Come on — everyone knows this one. Cary Elwes played Westley — also known as the Dread Pirate Roberts — in the 1987 film The Princess Bride. When Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra said in a profile of Norman Lear, “Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo ‘The Princess Bride,” Cary, 56, responded perfectly on social media. “There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world,” he tweeted. “It would be a pity to damage this one.”

Christopher Walken

NBC did a television special called Peter Pan Live! in December 2014, and Christopher Walken played the infamous Captain Hook. He said of the character, “There’s something a little bit sad about him. It’s almost a little bit like, ‘Poor old Hook.'”

Colin O’Donoghue

Colin O’Donoghue is fairly well-known for portraying Captain Killian “Hook” Jones on Once Upon a Time. His version of Hook got a happy ending (before the show was rebooted), and he told Entertainment Weekly ahead of the finale, “It’s very, very rare that you get a chance to really explore a character. I’ve been lucky that with Hook, I’ve been able to do so many different things with him.”

Donald Sutherland

Told you we’d throw some cartoon pirates in here. Donald Sutherland played Captain Charles Johnson in the 2015 Canadian film Pirate’s Passage. Donald also helped produce and write the project.

Dustin Hoffman

Yes, another one of Peter Pan’s nemeses. Dustin Hoffman starred as Captain Hook in the 1991 film Hook which also famously included Robin Williams among its cast.

Eddie Izzard

A British television miniseries called Treasure Island — based off the novel of the same name — starred comedian and actor Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver, the leader of a band of mutineers. Donald Sutherland was also in this film as Captain Flint.

Elijah Wood

Elijah Wood played Ben Gunn, a former member of Flint’s crew, in Treasure Island alongside Eddie. OK, so, he’s more of a former pirate, but still.

Geena Davis

Geena Davis played Morgan Adams in the 1995 comedy Cutthroat Island. She is actually the daughter of another pirate who ends up following in her dad’s footsteps.

Hans Conried

Hans Conried did the voice of Captain Hook in the 1953 Disney animated feature Peter Pan. Fun fact — he also played George Darling, the Darling children’s father.

Hugh Grant

The Pirates! Band of Misfits starred several well-known celebrities as pirates. Hugh Grant voiced Pirate Captain in the film, and that doesn’t really need more explanation. All you really need to know is that he was out to win a Pirate of the Year competition.

Jeremy Piven

Jeremy Piven was also in the 2012 stop-motion animated pirate movie with Hugh. He played a rival pirate named Black Bellamy who previously won a Pirate of the Year trophy.

Martin Freeman

That’s right — Martin Freeman was in the Pirates! Band of Misfits movie as well. He voiced the role of the Pirate with a scarf, or Number 2. Maybe not the most memorable name, but we promise he plays an important part in the adventure.

Finally, we have Cutlass Liz, played by Salma Hayek in Band of Misfits. She played a more minor role, but we need more ladies on this list.

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman played Blackbeard in the 2015 film Pan. Hugh said of his appearance during the movie, “At first people didn’t recognize me. It was such a shock to them but a shock to me too whenever I looked in the mirror.”

Johnny Depp

You had to know we’d get here eventually. Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is probably the most well-known pirate of the modern age. He played the character in the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and the sequels — Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End, On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley played Elizabeth Swan in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. She goes from being a proper society lady to a pirate after getting mixed up with Jack Sparrow.

Orlando Bloom

The son of the son of Bootstrap Bill Turner, Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner goes from being a blacksmith’s apprentice to leaning into his pirate legacy over the course of the Pirates of the Carribean films.

Penelope Cruz Celebrities Who Have Famously Played Pirates

Penélope Cruz

Penélope Cruz played the daughter of Blackbeard and is an accomplished pirate herself in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. She was also a former love interest of Jack Sparrow.

Jordan Fisher

Jordan Fisher is the voice of a pirate named Sea Hawk in the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power 2018 reboot series. We figured we’d add another TV cartoon to the list.

Macklemore

It’s true! Macklemore played a pirate in the music video for his song “Can’t Hold Us.” He later revealed that shooting the project was not the greatest experience. “We got out to the water and there was, like, 30-foot waves, we’re, like, five hours out from the shore, everybody starts throwing up – all these random extras that we found on Craigslist … I was the sickest I’ve ever been in my life,” he said in a pre-taped segment for the iHeartRadio Music Awards in 2014.

Who and what hasn’t Tim Curry played throughout his long career?! He played the part of Long John Silver in the 1996 American musical comedy Muppet Treasure Island … and seemed to have a blast doing so.
