Clearing the air. Anne Hathaway recently announced that she was going to stop drinking and fans immediately jumped to conclusions with questions like “Is Anne an alcoholic?” Now, months later, the 36-year-old is clarifying why she made her decision to become sober and it’s all thanks to … hangovers.

“I didn’t put [a drink] down because my drinking was a problem; I put it down because the way I drink leads me to have hangovers and those were the problem,” the actress confessed to Boston Common in a new interview published on Tuesday, April 16. We’ve all had those hangovers before and they not fun! “My last hangover lasted for five days. When I’m at a stage in my life where there is enough space for me to have a hangover, I’ll start drinking again, but that won’t be until my kid is out of the house,” the A-lister revealed.  Hey, at least the Princess of Genovia is relatable!

The Devil Wears Prada actress first mentioned that she was giving up alcohol for 18 years on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in January. The mom-of-one decided to quit drinking so that she could be the best mother possible to her adorable 3-year-old son, whom she shares with her husband, Adam Shulman. “I’m going to stop drinking while my son is living in my house, just because I don’t totally love the way I do it and he’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the morning,” she told the 61-year-old host. Anne explained the exact moment when she knew that she just really had to quit the booze. “I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school. I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me. I didn’t love that one.”

Matthew McConaughey may also be the reason for Anne’s new sober lifestyle. The 49-year-old actor and his wife, Camila, took Anne out for a wild night out on the Island of Mauritius, while they were filming the thriller, Serenity, The three may have had a little too much fun, but who wouldn’t? “We drank the night away,” she shared of the eventful evening. However, things took a turn for the worse when Anne realized that she had something a little important to attend the next morning. “Then I had to go to a meeting with Steven Knight, our director, the next day. I was just kind of — have you guys ever had to do a meeting hungover?” Anne asked the audience.

“And so I was just kind of like stumbling with one eye open and I was trying to convince him certain things about my character.” Don’t worry,  she admitted to her director that she was, in fact, hungover. However, luckily, Steven could not tell! Well, until the next meeting when her hangover was cured. ”Oh, now I can,” the Oscar winner recalls her director saying.

Anne wants the world to know that she is most definitely not judging those who do drink alcohol. “I just want to make this clear: Most people don’t have to do such an extreme thing. I don’t think drinking is bad. It’s just the way I do it — which I personally think is really fun and awesome — is just not the kind of fun and awesome that goes with having a child for me. But this isn’t a moralistic stance.”
