“This is an awesome moment for TLC, as we create a family show based on one of our most popular 90 Day couples, and on a whole new night,” Howard Lee, President and General Manager of TLC, said in a press release. “Our fans can’t get enough of Pedro, Chantel and their larger-than-life families. For a brand known as THE destination for love, relationships and family shows, THE FAMILY CHANTEL hits the bullseye.”

It’s interesting that Chantel and Pedro would choose to go into business together because their storyline on season 4 of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? makes it seem like they’re headed for splitsville because of all of the drama between their families.

As fans recall, Pedro did not start off on the right foot with his in-laws, or “The Family Chantel,” as he says on the show.

When they debuted on 90 Day Fiancé season 4, Chantel explained that she met Pedro through a mutual friend because she wanted to learn Spanish and he wanted to learn English. They started messaging each other on Facebook, and their friendship quickly turned into romance and they dated long distance.

A few months after they met online, Chantel visited Pedro in the Dominican Republic and she would take regular trips to visit him. During one of her trips, they got engaged and then filed for the K-1 visa, which allowed Pedro to travel from his home country of the Dominican Republic to the United States as the fiancé of an American citizen. Once in the states, Pedro had 90 days to marry Chantel or he would have had to return to the Dominican Republic.

But Chantel lied to her family about her plans with Pedro. Instead of telling them that they were engaged and going to get married, she said that Pedro was in America on a student visa.

When she finally broke the news to her parents, Karen and Thomas, just days before her wedding, they were obviously upset. But they still attended the couple’s wedding.

After that, Karen and Thomas never trusted Pedro. They believe that Pedro is just using their daughter for a green card. They also believe that his mother planned for him to find an American girl, get married, move to the United States and work so he could “harvest the American dollar” and send money back to his family. It also didn’t help their theory when Pedro revealed he wanted to start his own business in the Dominican Republic during an episode that aired on season 3 of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?

But Chantel’s family aren’t the only ones who don’t approve of her marriage to Pedro. His mother, Lidia, and sister, Nicole, don’t approve of Chantel and they don’t get along with her either.

During one of the most infamous scenes in the franchise, Lidia told Chantel that if she doesn’t trust Pedro or his family, that she should divorce him. Nicole agreed, and told Chantel to “divorcia te, en punto.” But because of the language barrier, Chantel thought Nicole called her a “bitch” in Spanish.

The family’s feud came to a boiling point during season 3, when Karen and Thomas invited Chantel, Pedro, and Nicole — who was visiting them in Georgia from the D.R. — to their home for dinner.

A physical fight broke out at the dinner table between Pedro and Chantel’s brother, River, and they are still dealing with the aftermath of that fight on the current season.

So far, on season 4, Pedro is still at odds with “The Family Chantel.” Because of all of their issues, he decided to leave Chantel behind in Georgia so that he could spend time with his friends and family in the Dominican Republic. Even though Pedro asked her not to, Chantel decided to visit him in the D.R., and while she was there, Pedro urged her to make things right with his mom and sister — but it didn’t go the way he had hoped. Chantel’s visit ended with her in tears, and the fate of their marriage seemed to be up in the air.
