As Ben Affleck leaped on stage to accept his Best Picture Oscar for Argo on Feb 4., he reeled off a list of gracious thank-yous— but none was more shocking than the one aimed at his equally famous wife, Jennifer Garner.
“I want to thank you for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases,” Ben told her. “It is work, but it’s the best kind of work.”
While there was a bunch of speculation regarding the status of their marriage after his speech, sources tell In Touch that the couple are indeed very much together.
“Their marriage has really been tested,” an insider says. “But they got through it with a lot of forgiveness on Jen’s part. She truly loves Ben.”
So what struggles have the A-list couple had to overcome?
For starters, Ben’s poker habit. In 2011, Ben was linked to a multimillion-dollar gambling scandal. He was reportedly involved in no-limit Texas Hold’Em games with other stars like Tobey Maguire.
And then there were the co-star rumors. Ben’s flirty rapport with beauties like his The Town co-star Rebecca Hall has sparked infidelity buzz. “Ben and Jen hit a rough patch,” a few years ago, says her friend. “But Ben changed his ways.”
It also comes as no surprise that the Academy Award winner often immerses himself in nonstop work. “Work is very important to me,” says the actor-director whose family has sacrificed time with him so he could focus on moviemaking. Even when he’s home, Ben says, “I wonder what’s on the work front.”
The parents to daughters Violet, 7 and Seraphina, 4, and son Samuel, 13 mos., have certainly been through a lot, but their tried and true marriage reinforces one thing— nothing worth having comes easily.
