Back in January, David and Louise Turpin were arrested after being accused of starving and holding their children captive in their California home. In new YouTube video footage — obtained by ABC News and posted on March 6 — the Turpins’ 17-year-old daughter is seen singing self-written songs in front of grimy doors and a room full of what appears to be dirty clothes.

In one of the video clips, the teenage girl plays with two of the family’s small dogs. According to authorities, the canines, along with David and Louise’s youngest child — a two-year-old daughter — were the only beings in the couple’s home who weren’t malnourished.

The 17-year-old daughter’s last video was posted just seven days before she broke out of the house and called 911 on her parents. It was then that David and Louise were accused of abusing 12 of their kids. According to prosecutors, they forced their children to only shower once a year, shackled them, and physically hit them on a regular basis. They allegedly refused to unshackle their kids even when they had to use the bathroom.

After finding the children, prosecutors determined that they hadn’t seen a doctor in years and some had never been to a dentist. David and Louise’s eldest daughter — who is 29 years old — was severely famished and only weighed 82 pounds at the time of her rescue. These days, however, the kids seem to be doing much better.

“Their minds are just being opened [to] having a choice and not being so controlled,” Corona Mayor Karen Spiegel told ABC News in February, adding that several of the 13 siblings are “starting to make plans for their future.”

Though many of them don’t seem to have a proper education, the young victims are now “getting up and making the day happen for themselves, getting out of bed and deciding what they want to eat,” Spiegel added. “They’re starting from very elementary stuff, [but have] progressed very, very well.”

According to ABC News, David and Louise have been charged with 12 counts of torture, 12 counts of false imprisonment, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult, and six counts of child abuse. Additionally, David was charged with one count of a lewd act on a child under the age of 14 by force, fear or duress. Last month, three more charges of abuse were filed against the couple and one new count of felony assault was filed against Louise. They have pleaded not guilty to all charges, but face life in prison if convicted.
