Sounds like she’s the “scary” one for a reason. A former costume designer for the Spice Girls told Now magazine that Mel B. was reportedly the “most difficult” to work with of the pop stars, and shared some memories from his past life outfitting the girl group for other events.

The Spice Girls announced that they will embark on a stadium tour in 2019 on Monday, Nov. 5, sans Victoria Beckham AKA Posh Spice. Following that announcement, Adrian Gwillym spoke with Now about his experience working on their costumes for prior tours and Spice World. And he was very honest about Mel B. in particular.

“Mel B. was the most difficult to work with, she was so outspoken,” Adrian claimed. “She was very set in her ways in what she wanted, and sometimes it didn’t work for the look of the band.”

Adrian helped create more than 200 costumes for the Spice Girls for their first world tour and for their movie. For the Nov. 19 edition of Now, he shared one specific example from when the girls were performing in Ireland, and told the publication, “I’d been working 10 days non-stop. We had to make Mel B. a snakeskin suit and it didn’t fit perfectly. She said, ‘Who f—ing made this?’ And we went, ‘We did. But we only had three hours and we’d only just been told about it and we had s–tloads of other work!'”

Adrian reported that Mel was embarrassed and apologized, and she did wear the outfit in the end, but clearly it’s a moment that stood out for the designer.

Adrian admitted that the tour was tough, and that the team “had so much work in so little time,” but that for the most part, the Spice Girls “were a good bunch of girls.” But Mel B. specifically knew what she wanted, and that was to be “outrageous,” and it sometimes led to awkward moments like the one mentioned above. Pop music divas…what do you expect, really?
