‘Married at First Sight’ Star Danielle DeGroot “Still Got Nothin’ but Love” for Cody Knapek Following Divorce Bombshell
Season 5 of Married at First Sight ended in shock when all three couples decided to stay together — including Cody and Danielle, who chose to stick it out, despite showing signs of unhappiness. Today, however, the couple has announced their divorce.
Earlier this afternoon, Danielle took to Instagram with an emotional statement. She wrote, “It hasn’t been an easy year, but it has been one of a lot of personal growth and of meeting some amazing people, including the one I got to marry. We value and respect marriage, but life is short and we also value happiness. While this was a difficult decision and divorce is not something either of us hoped for, we decided we will be happiest separating. Still got nothin’ but love for Cody!” The reality star also thanked their fans for their constant support. She added, “Thank you to everyone who supported us on our journey! We hope you will be respectful and understanding of our decision. I went into MAFS trusting that this was God’s or some greater power’s plan and I stand by that now. Still a big believer in love and looking forward to the future.”

In June, fans watched as the couple stayed together, even though they didn’t know what to say to each other most of the time. In fact, they really didn’t seem all that comfortable around each other and had zero chemistry. And yet Cody still managed to mention his uncontrollable need for sex in every scene.
Earlier in the season, the couple did a bunch of domestic chores together, like wash the dogs and clean the house. Although the couple got into a brief water fight while washing the dogs that was sort of cute, the moment was fleeting as later in the episode, Danielle gave Cody the task of fixing a power drill. As Cody struggled to fix the tool (something he’s clearly never done before), Danielle loomed over him with a look that screamed, This is not manly! Cody told the camera, “I don’t want to look toward Danielle to fix the drill for me because Danielle’s going to make a judgment on me as a person.” Ouch.
Unfortunately, although the divorce doesn’t seem to come as a surprise, fans were quick to share their condolances. One person wrote, “I mean I saw it coming but it still makes me sad. I was really rooting for you two. But you can’t have a successful marriage when there’s no real passionate love.” Another added, “Wishing you both happiness and hope you both find what you’re looking for.”

Ashley and Anthony
Although Ashley and Anthony are the only couple who have a chance at lasting after the show, they both have a habit of getting into a lot of petty arguments — and they keep adding up.
Last week Ashley had a tense discussion with sex expert Rachel DeAlto who told Ashley to think of maybe not dropping all her issues on Anthony and to fix some of her problems on her own. Ashley did not like hearing that.
In this episode, Ashley vents to Anthony about her talk with Rachel. You can tell she’s expecting Anthony to chime in and agree with her, that Rachel is wrong and he loves helping Ashley with her endless bag of quirks. But Anthony, in his own passive way, instead says the opposite. He says he wants to help but that he doesn’t always “have the answers.” Ashley reluctantly accepts this.
Later in the episode, they get in another petty disagreement, this one about Ashley taking Anthony’s last name, an issue that has come up in the past. Ashley tells him she’s not ready to give up her last name yet, but then, to the cameras, she reveals her true motives.
“Maybe I’ll take his last name if we have kids,” she says.
Not a bad plan on her part. Ashley has been going on and on since the honeymoon that she wants a baby within a year. Anthony says that’s too soon because, duh, they just met.
After #LastNameGate, they get into another bickerish fight. Over dinner, Ashley asks Anthony if he enjoyed the pedicure he got with her earlier in the week. He tells her it was an interesting experience, but that he’ll never do it again. For some reason this bothers Ashley.
“I don’t want you to do anthing you don’t want to do,” she tells him.
“Listen,” he tells her. “I will try it with a smile on my face.”
“And I don’t do it with a smile on my face?” she asks him.
“Not always,” he replies.
Ashley did not like hearing that.
Nate and Sheila
Despite their massive honeymoon fight, Nate and Sheila are now doing just fine — if they can hurdle over their massive trust issues.
Over dinner, Nate asks Sheila to rate him, on a scale of one to ten, in how much she trusts him to be faithful when he’s out partying at clubs. And, to put things in perspective, here’s a reminder of how Nate likes to get down:
Sheila hesitates before giving him a six. Yikes.
Despite the fact that Sheila thinks Nate might cheat on her at any moment, she goes out and has the last name on her driver’s license changed to Nate’s.
Nate is so touched by this, he almost cries. He tells the cameras that he now knows Sheila is committed to the experience and won’t flee as soon as the show is over, as so many others have done.
One person who’s not happy about this? Nate’s mom. Remember her?
She drops by to give Nate an earful about how he’s making the wrong decision, and she should know, because she’s the adult. Nate tells her she’s making him mad, and so his mother does the absolute last thing one should do when trying to deescalate tension — she stands up angrily. Nate tells her to sit down, but she screams “No!” Actually, maybe Nate’s the adult in this relationship.
In the preview for next week, all three couples go on a holiday as drama pops off between Nate and one of Sheila’s male friends — and it doesn’t look good.
