The Shade! Lorde Calls Out Kanye West And Kid Cudi For Stealing Her Stage Design
Is imitation truly the sincerest form of flattery? Eh, not according to Lorde. The Melodrama singer took to Instagram on Monday, Nov. 12, to accuse Kanye West and Kid Cudi of copying her stage design over the weekend. The two rappers performed at the Camp Flog Gnaw Festival in Los Angeles inside a clear box that was suspended over the stage, giving it the appearance that it was floating. And while fans loved the performance, it looks like the ~floating stage~ concept wasn’t as original as they may have thought.
The stage Kanye and Cudi are on is not only floating above the crowd, but seems to be moving around now too as they perform “Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2).”

In a four-part Instagram story, Lorde put the duo on blast and compared their floating stage to the ones she’s used several times over the last couple of years while on tour. She first shared a picture of her floating stage with the caption, “March Tour,” followed by another picture of herself performing at Coachella in CA in 2017 — also in a glass box suspended over the stage. The third picture featured Kanye West and Kid Cudi performing together, making the similarities between the two stages — and the message she was trying to send — abundantly clear.
“I’m proud of the work I do and it’s flattering when other artists feel inspired by it, to the extent that they choose to try it on themselves,” she captioned a fourth picture of herself performing on tour. “But don’t steal — not from women or anyone else — not in 2018 or ever.” Ouch!
While it doesn’t look like Kanye has responded to Lorde’s shade so far, he did take to Twitter shortly after to let fans know his and Kid Cudi’s joint album “isn’t ready yet.”
“I’ll announce the release date once it’s done,” he wrote. “Thank you for understanding.” Hmm, can’t wait! Do you think Lorde will buy a copy?
