Another feud brewing? Rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z (real name: Shawn Carter) have had quite the tumultuous friendship over the years, and now it looks like West is taking up with Roc-A-Fella Records, the record label formerly owned by Carter, 49. According to documents obtained by In Touch, West, 41, is planning to sue both the record label and the music publishing company EMI April Music.

In the heavily redacted documents, which have yet to be filed, West gave a short history of his career thus far. “The year 2000 turned into a breakout year for Mr. West. He produced what has come to be regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time, The Blueprint, for recording artist Jay-Z,” the statement read. “Mr. West also co-wrote four of the songs. In addition to helping revitalize Jay-Z’s career, Mr. West’s work on that album caused other recording artists, including Beanie Sigel, Freeway, and Cam’ron to seek him out to produce their recordings.”

West’s statement went on to highlight his 2002 near-fatal car accident, in which he suffered from multiple injuries and had to have his jaw wired shut. The accident was referenced in the lead single “Through the Wire” off his first solo album, College Dropout — which was released by Roc-A-Fella Records in 2004. In 2003, West signed a contract with EMI for the publishing rights to his songs.

The basis of the lawsuit seems to stem from both West’s contracts with EMI and Roc-A-Fella. But even though Carter was known as a founding member of the Roc-A-Fella record label, he no longer holds a stake in the company after he sold his share in 2004, MTV reported at the time. So West’s current lawsuit might not be due to any personal beef between him and Carter.

West and Carter have been at odds with each other ever since 2016. But in April 2018, Carter revealed that there is no bad blood between them during an interview on Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. “That’s my brother, we’re beyond friends,” the 48-year-old told David. “Really, like literally my little brother is Kanye. And like, [with] your little brother, things happen sometimes.”
