Congrats are in order for Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo! Jer took to Instagram over the weekend to announce that he and his wife — who star on TLC’s Counting On — have expanded their brood. “Welp, we’re now a family of four,” the new dad captioned the Sept. 2 pic. The news may come as a surprise, though, to some fans. After all, the famous family wasn’t always able to own pets. In an interview with the Huffington Post in 2011, patriarch Jim Bob opened up about their strict no-fun policy.

“I grew up watching TV, but when we got married, a doctor friend of ours encouraged us not to have a pet or a TV the first year of marriage. So we did that. For the first year we lived on love,” Jim Bob explained. “And after that, someone gave us a TV and for the first three weeks we were both glued to it. Communications dropped off, we weren’t talking as much, and we couldn’t believe the content on TV we didn’t think was appropriate. This is detrimental to our marriage. We prayed about it and felt we had to pull it out of our house, which we did. And I would say that is one of the best things we have done for our family.”

So what did they do to fill their time without an eight-hour Netflix binge? And how could they have possibly lived without a pet to, well, pet? TBH, we’re not sure. Maybe makeout? That said, there has been some evidence of furry friends on the compound over the years.

In fact, they have a particularly interesting relationship with felines. While Jinger and Jeremy’s nephew, Spurgeon, was once spotted randomly petting a cat — whose owner is still unknown — there was one episode of 19 Kids and Counting where the Duggars gradually end up with a bunch of little kitties. On the show, Michelle received a call from her kids, who wanted to get her permission to purchase a kitten. Michelle gave in, but being the animal-lover that she is, couldn’t say no to a few more. In other words, the Duggar cat count eventually rose to five. “Just when I thought we were done rescuing kittens, we ended up with three more,” Michelle said at the time.

Unfortunately, we must also refer to that time Derick Dillard once tried running over a cat with his sled… Yeah… seriously. Here’s to hoping little Jacob is in good hands.
