RIP, Spike! Jacob Roloff took to Instagram on Sunday, Dec. 23, to reveal the family farm‘s beloved cat had passed away. Unfortunately, rather than sending him comforting thoughts, many slammed the former Little People, Big World star for the “weird” photo.

“Our farm cat since forever had to be put down recently,” Matt and Amy‘s son captioned the snap. “Lived a good long life though, I swear I saw him catch a mouse like 6 months ago… SPIKE (2000-2018) RIP.”

Fans quickly began commenting on the pic, with one person writing, “Weird picture, but sorry for your loss.” Another added, “Taking a picture of your cat’s dug up grave and his casket is weird. But it gets people talking right, so win for Jacob. I see what you did there.” Someone else, however, defended the 21-year-old. “I’m sorry, Jacob. It’s very sad to lose a pet. And it’s not a weird picture.”

Jacob was once estranged from his famous family and often spoke out against the show. In his book Out to See, he revealed he had a difficult time finding himself as he was forced to grow up with the world watching.

“Among so many things, I simply did not want this ridiculous reality TV to use up so much of my time, lest it leave too deep an imprint on my ability to influence the world otherwise,” the black sheep sibling admitted. “I did not want this imposition to become my identity, and so I rebelled in the manner that I did, and eventually exited the show.”

Jacob continued, “The entire concept of reality TV is strange because, as a viewer, you are subscribing to a particular illusion — that you are witnessing and being let in on the secrets of the subjects’ lives,” he said. “In reality you are being shown a shallow character and only what someone else approves of, in relation to narrative and talking points.”

These days, though, Jacob seems to have mended his relationship with his parents and he and fiancée Isabel Rock seem happier than ever. He’s frequently fawning over her on his Instagram, posting captions like, “She’s gorgeous and gonna be my wife. Wow.” They seem to be weathering the storm and smoothing over all the bumps in the road together, whether it’s Jacob’s rebellious past or Izzy’s car troubles.
