Tragedy struck on the set of Deadpool 2 in Vancouver Monday morning when a female stunt driver lost control of her bike and died. The woman — identified as Joi “S.J.” Harris — had been maneuvering a motorcycle down a set of stairs at Jack Poole Plaza when she suddenly jumped a curb and crashed into a glass window at Shaw Tower.
According to the Vancouver Sun, “A crumpled motorcycle could be seen lying on its side surrounded by broken glass. Crew members appeared distraught and one was in tears.” During the 911 call — obtained by TMZ — the caller could be heard saying an actor had gone “airborne” through a window into a building across the street and “hasn’t been moving.” Joi was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time because her character was not wearing one in the movie.

This was the Brooklyn-native’s first feature as a stuntwoman, though she was a pro-motorcycle racer with a passion for the sport. On Friday, she posted a selfie on Facebook in Vancouver with the caption, “EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON” and the hashtag “#staythecourse.” She also added that she was “feeling fantastic.”
Since the accident, Ryan Reynolds — the film’s lead — made a statement. He wrote on Instagram, “Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming Deadpool. We are heartbroken, shocked, and devastated…but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them — along with each and every person she touched in this world.” A company spokesperson for 20th Century Fox also told Us Weekly, “We are deeply saddened by the accident that occurred on the set of Deadpool 2 this morning. Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of our crew member during this difficult time.” Production for the superhero sequel was immediately shut down, and there’s no word on when filming will resume.
