He has her back! Cody Simpson defended girlfriend Miley Cyrus after she offended the LGBTQ community when she said, “You don’t have to be gay,” on an Instagram Live chat on Sunday, October 20. The 22-year-old cleared the air on his girl’s behalf on Australia’s The Project on Tuesday, October 22.

“Yeah she … people took that the wrong way, I think,” he said to the show’s hosts after viewing the viral clip. After facing backlash from her insensitive words, Miley, 26, took to Twitter to clarify. “I was talking s—t about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don’t CHOOSE your sexuality. You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTQ community I am a part of,” she wrote. Cody echoed her words on-air stating, “Absolutely you don’t choose who you fall for or who you love, whatever gender or who you are.”

Aside from her comments on sexuality, fans were quick to notice the shade Miley threw shade at ex Liam Hemsworth, whom she split from in August after eight months of marriage. “Guys, I was being a little too, like, hardcore feminist vibes and just like, I don’t know, not allowing anyone in, but now I am. There are good men out there, guys. Don’t give up,” she said in the viral clip. “You don’t have to be gay. There are good people with d—ks out there, you just got to find them. You got to find a d—k that’s not a d—k, you know what I mean?”

Cody Simpson Defends Girlfriend Miley Cyrus Comments Following LGBTQ Backlash

Fans were outraged by the singer’s statements and took to the comments. “Damn. Miley Cyrus is really out there shading Liam and basically calling him a piece of s—t. Like don’t forget you loved him and married him,” wrote one user. Another added, “Miley, this is so not it. Women don’t ‘have to be gay’ because they ‘can’t find a good person with a d—k.’ Don’t use the queer community as the stop-gap because you couldn’t find a boyfriend. People aren’t queer because they ‘gave up’ on men. This is so insulting.” Luckily Miley has her man by her side in the wake of her controversy.
