This year’s top acts—like Taylor Swift and Eminem—took home awards but there was at least one big surprise of the night; Korean pop sensations, Girls’ Generation, took home the prize for Video of the Year, beating out Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miley Cyrus, One Direction, PSY, Selena Gomez and more!

While they may not be well-known in the US, to say the girls are successful in their native Korea would be an understatement; first, hit play on the song that earned them Video of the Year—called “I Got a Boy”—and check out these 5 Things You Need to Know About Girls’ Generation!

1. The Basics

There are 9 girls that make up this powerful girl group; Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun; they were formed after their record label, S.M. Entertainment, had a lot of success with a boyband and wanted to channel the same success with girls.

It took years to find the right members of the group, until they unofficially launched in Summer 2007.

2. They’re Shattering The Glass Ceiling

These girls are a really really big deal in South Korea; their popularity has earned them to official title of “The Nation’s Girl Group.” When they were named most influential entertainers in 2011 and 2012 by The Sisa Journal, they were the first female performers to make the list.

They were also named the Most Powerful Entertainers in South Korea by Forbes and placed first on the Top Female Singer’s list on the Leespiar Popularity Survey

3. They’re Multitalented—And Multilingual!

While some of the confusion when they snagged the Video of the Year at the YouTube Music Awards was because they had a mostly international audience, the girls have not only performed in their native tongue (Korean), but also in Japanese and English!

4. Their Song, “Gee,” Was Named Single of the Decade in South Korea

The catchy song, which was released in 2009, was crowned the single of the decade in South Korea; additionally, it was the most popular K-POP song on YouTube, until it was surpassed by PSY’s “Gangnam Style”—which is unfair competition, if you ask us!

5. There’s No Stopping Them!

In addition to all the accolades and success that the girls have received, they’re only going up! Not only have they worked as spokespeople for international brands—such as Clean and Clear, Lipton tea, Goodwill and more—but they are also the most sought-after celebrities in South Korea. With the success of “Gee” and their multilingual talent, the YouTube awards are likely the first of many international honors you’ll see Girls’ Generation receive.

Keep your eye out for them!
