Demi Lovato Deletes Twitter Account After Backlash Over 21 Savage Meme

Singer Demi Lovato deactivated her Twitter on Sunday, February 3, after a meme she posted about 21 Savage led some to attack her struggle with drugs. The pop star, 26, posted a pic seemingly poking fun at his surprise British citizenship, which was not taken well by fans.

“Go shoot some more heroin, Demi,” one person wrote, while another added, “COMING FROM A JUNKIE LMAOOO,” and a third chimed in, “Lol who overdosed??? Don’t @ me.”

ICYMI, 21 Savage, 26, whose real name is Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier that same day. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, ICE claims the “Bank Account” rapper is actually a United Kingdom citizen who has overstayed his visa in America. Bryan Cox, ICE spokesperson, told the AJC that Abraham-Joseph has been “unlawfully present” in the states. He entered on a visa in July 2005, but the visa expired the following year.

The rapper’s attorney, Dina LaPolt, has since told AMI in a statement: “We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with the authorities to clear up any misunderstandings. Mr. Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in this country, especially in Atlanta, Georgia, and is actively working in the community — leading programs to help underprivileged youths in financial literacy.”

Demi took to her Instagram Story after deleting Twitter to explain why she said the memes were her “favorite part of the Super Bowl.” She said, “Wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported. I know that’s not a joke … not have I EVER laughed at that. The meme I posted/ was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction, let alone their OD.”

She concluded, “Lastly, I wasn’t making fun on anything having to do with deportation or even anything against him. I was laughing at who the f—k knew 21 was British? Literally no one. That’s it. It doesn’t go deeper than that. I’m sorry if I upset people truly. Yo @wale if you wanna talk, then answer my DMs.”
