She’s out of the loop! Serena Williams said she had no idea there was any sort of controversy surrounding Meghan Markle’s recent Wimbledon appearance. At a Wimbledon 2019 conference on Thursday, July 11, the tennis player had nothing but positive things to say about her friend. “I didn’t know there was negative media out there,” she said. “Any time I see her name attached to anything, I don’t read it.” (That’s one way of handling it!)

The Duchess attended Wimbledon during a July 4 match and a member of her security team reportedly asked people there not to take photos of her. Apparently, her outfit choice received some criticism as well. But Serena, 37, didn’t know anything about the critiques and made it clear how grateful she was that Meghan, also 37, was there to cheer her on. “She couldn’t be a better friend to me,” the athlete said. “Low moments, high moments, she’s always there, and that’s all I want to be to her.”

Previously, actress Tatum O’Neal said she was disappointed with the Duchess of Sussex over the Wimbledon appearance. She appeared on Good Day Britain on Tuesday, July 9, and said of Meghan, “You’re now one of the people, you‘re a royal, you are not an actor … To have a bodyguard muscle somebody out I just think is so tacky.”

The thespian continued, “It’s so upsetting to me, because if you think of Princess Diana and you think of how absolutely inclusive she was and she would never turn anyone away. I just I had so much hope for Meghan. I wanted her to be the next Princess Diana and it just seems like it’s all about her and it’s really upsetting me.” She also noted that she was unhappy with some of the Duchess’ spending habits. “If you get, you know, the [engagement] ring reset and have it bigger and then you do a $400,000 [home] renovation … and you do the private jet to New York for the [baby shower] … you know, it’s not Diana … this is not Diana, this is something else, I don’t know.”

But Serena apparently hadn’t heard similar comments for herself before the conference and isn’t paying them any mind now. She previously acknowledged her royal friend’s presence at her match against Kaja Juvan and revealed, “I knew she was there and it’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support … tennis, so I was happy.” Don’t let the hate get to you, Meghan and Serena!
