Cue the tears. Modern Family officially airs its last episode on April 8, 2020, and viewers are devastated over saying goodbye to their favorite TV families. The ABC hit show has been nominated 82 times and earned 22 Emmys over the course of 11 years.
The comedy — which stars Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Ed O’Neill, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Rico Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Nolan Gould and Eric Stonestreet — first premiered in 2009 and immediately won over viewers and critics. Throughout the series, fans were introduced to Jay Pritchett and his family — all of whom live in Los Angeles — and the crazy shenanigans they took part in.
Steven Levitan — one of the cocreators — took to Instagram to show how much the cast has changed over the last decade. “Ten years ago, we took the first cast photo outside our first #modernfamily table read,” he wrote in July 2019. “Today, the ending begins.”
Scroll through the gallery below to see photos of the cast then versus now. You won’t believe your eyes! Oh, and maybe grab some tissues while you’re at it.

Ariel Winter Then
Ariel scored the role of Alex Dunphy — the nerdy brainiac — in the series. “Alex is a great character, but Alex doesn’t change a ton,” she said during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I was a kid as Alex on the show and now, I’m an adult as Alex, so it’s a little different than the roles I want to play. I don’t want to play kid to adult. I want to just play my age now.”

However, the young adult — who turned 22 in January 2020 — looks back on her role quite fondly. “It’s strange to think that it’s coming to an end. It will be hard to say goodbye,” she admitted. “It will be hard to leave that, but I am excited to do new things. I’m excited to play new roles and to do things that challenge me a bit more.”

Sofia Vergara Then
Sofia plays Gloria Delgado-Pritchett — the feisty Columbian — who married Jay Pritchett. The brunette beauty has spoken about her Latin background since playing Gloria. “I was a single mother. I am a woman, and I started in a business,” she told BuzzFeed News’ Profile. “I started to make money and work, and opportunities came to me … and you would be ungrateful if life presents to you all these opportunities, and you’re like, ‘Oh no, I’m not going to do it.’”

Sofia Vergara Now
While it’s bittersweet for the 47-year-old to say goodbye, it seems like she is looking forward to what her character has in store this last season. “Gloria has such a great life and such a beautiful family that I think anything that the writers have prepared for her, I’m going to be happy with,” she said. “I’m sure that it’s gonna be great, like all the seasons’ finales.”

Sarah Hyland Then
Sarah plays Haley Dunphy — the oldest child of Claire and Phil Dunphy — and is young and pretty. However, her character had a pivotal plot line during the 10th season when it was revealed that she was pregnant with twins.

Sarah Hyland Now
In real life, the 29-year-old is engaged to Bachelor fan favorite Wells Adams and is gearing up for her next endeavor. The actress has signed on to star in and executive produce a new comedy called The Untitled Sarah Hyland + Emily Gordon Project, which was inspired by Sarah and Emily’s real-life experiences.

Rico Rodriguez Then
The 21-year-old plays Manny Delgado — the son of Gloria and Jay — on the TV show. “Ed took me under his wing when we started,” he recalled of his TV father. “For the first few years, I did most of my scenes with adults. When we did group scenes, I got to be with the other kids.”

“To be able to be on this show is a blessing,” he previously revealed. “It’s been a roller coaster, but it’s been a great one, and I love it.” Rico also confessed that Ed and Sofia “are like a second set of parents” to him. “It’s always great to have that dynamic,” he added.

Nolan Gould Then
Nolan’s character is Luke Dunphy — the offbeat little brother to Haley and Alex. The actor was just 10 years old when he started on the show, and now he is 21 years old. How time flies!

Nolan Gould Now
“We’ve really grown up together the past 10 going on 11 years now,” Nolan explained to Hollywood Life about his bond with Ariel and Sarah. “I never went to real school, and I had friends, but for the most part, my life from a young age was focused on work, so it’s really cool to have people that became like family. I know that we’re bonded for life. We’re going to be best friends after the show.”

Julie Bowen Then
Julie is the overprotective mom named Claire Dunphy, and she revealed that stepping into her character helped her in real life with her kids. “Claire has more led me [in motherhood] because when I started doing Modern Family, I had babies,” she told PopCulture.com. “So, I kind of learned that you’re supposed to let stuff go because I kept saying it over and over. I had my own little life lessons every week.”

Julie Bowen Now
“Of course, it’s gonna be bittersweet because nobody wants to say goodbye to a family,” the 50-year-old told Collider of Modern Family coming to an end. “They’re just a different kind of family. People talk about their college roommates like they’re still best friends, and they often are, and here, I’ve college, twice, plus a couple years of grad school, with the same people. It’s gonna be hard not to have a stage to go to and play with them on. That’s gonna be very hard.”

Abc-Tv/Kobal/Shutterstock
Jesse Tyler Ferguson Then
Jesse’s character is Mitchell Pritchett — Claire’s brother and Jay’s son who is also married to Cameron Tucker. Cam and Mitchell end up having one daughter named Lily together. “I don’t want the show to live as a time capsule,” he said to AOL in 2018. “I want it to continue to be a pop culture touchstone for talking about equality and coming out and being yourself. I love that there is a visible gay couple that is raising a kid in a healthy environment on television. Well, mostly healthy, let’s be real.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson Now
The 44-year-old is happy that he could be a role model on television. “I would love for kids to see a future for themselves in characters like Mitch and Cam. That’s something that I didn’t have growing up, and I’m grateful that I can be that for other people,” he said.

ABC/Tony Rivetti
Jeremy Maguire Then
Jeremy Maguire — who plays Gloria’s sassy son Joe Pritchett — made his debut on the show in 2015. Jeremy, 8, usually plays opposite of Rico in the show. “I don’t have a big brother, so he takes the time to play and hang out with me,” Jeremy admitted about their bond. “He helps me with acting tips and to learn to be a better actor.”

“I enjoy spending time with all of them,” he revealed about the cast and crew. “I really like hanging out with Aubrey. It’s fun having another kid to hang out with on set. We get to play games and tell each other funny stories.”

Abc-Tv/Kobal/Shutterstock
Eric Stonestreet Then
Eric is Cameron Tucker on the show — the fun, lovable father and uncle who always gets into some sort of trouble. Even though Eric is straight, he believes that the country is less homophobic due to his character. “There’s just no doubt that we have had a good cultural [influence], and we’re very proud of that,” he said on The View in May.

The 48-year-old said, “We’re going to do our best to say a proper goodbye to this family and goodbye to you. Our writers and the whole staff are gonna do an amazing job.”

Abc-Tv/Kobal/Shutterstock
Ed O’Neill Then
Ed has been in the business a long time, but on Modern Family, he plays Jay Pritchett — the patriarch who sometimes gives his kids a hard time. At the end of the day, he is just a simple family man.

The 73-year-old said the cast may go on a trip to Columbia — where Sofia is from. Ed revealed that he so “lucky” to be a part of this show.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons Then
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons joined the show in its third season in 2011 as Lily — Cam and Mitchell’s daughter whom they adopted. “We’re good friends,” the 12-year-old told KTLA about working alongside Eric.

Aubrey admitted that she thinks of Ariel as a big sister. “Last year she gave me some really good advice because I was wondering if I should go to regular school or go back to home school, and she told me she went to high school, and she really liked it. She gave me some good advice,” she said.

Abc-Tv/Kobal/Shutterstock
Ty Burrell Then
Always making us laugh! Ty plays Phil Dunphy — the goofy, loving father to Haley, Alex and Luke — on the show. “He’s just such a well-intended person and guileless,” he told The Independent in 2014 about his love for his character. “I really aspire to that. I like him so much. It feels good going to work.”

Ty Burrell Now
“The first ‘first last’ was the table read, and it was actually fairly emotional, but I still feel like we won’t really start feeling it until we get closer to the end,” the 52-year-old said this past summer. “I think right now, we’re all just feeling so grateful for the time that we’ve had, for the 11 years that we’ve all been on such a special ride that it’s not feeling like the end yet, when I think the end is going to be hard — be genuinely hard.”
