A NBC insider spoke to In Touch exclusively revealing that while the public may be shocked after learning about Matt Lauer's behavior at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, his indiscretion has been talked about for years — and one time in particular it ended with a nasty message left for the former Today show co-anchor in his dressing room.
“The running joke was, ‘How many apartments is Matt renting for his girlfriends?’ ” the NBC insider tells In Touch of the disgraced former newsman who was fired from the Today show over allegations of sexual misconduct. One relationship ended so badly, the scorned lover wrote a nasty message — “You f—ed me!” — on Matt’s dressing room mirror, adds another insider.
The mess he’s created is far worse than anyone knows. Not only has Matt, 59, lost his lucrative $25 million-per-year gig, but sources say his wife of 19 years, Annette, 51 — mother of their three children, Jack, 16, Romy, 14, and Thijs, 11 — is leaving him.
Not everyone is celebrating Matt’s downfall, his ex-wife, Nancy Alspaugh, has become an unlikely ally. “I still support him, and never saw that side of him,” Nancy, who was wed to Matt from 1981 through 1988, tells the mag about the allegations. “Matt is decent and I want people to remember the good before jumping to conclusions. I feel so sorry for his poor wife and children. I hope his marriage gets stronger because of this, and if they bond together, it will.”
In response to the allegations against him, Matt noted that “some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed.”
